Wondering what I've found inside my new Peavey T-60

Post by aaronrob222 » Fri May 01, 2020 8:30 pm

So, I just bought a 1980 Peavey T-60 from Reverb. I immediately notice upon plugging it in that it sounds WAY darker than the one I owned back in college. More than that, the phase switch and special coil-splitting tone knobs did not seem to work as intended. I'm not a guru, but after opening it up I was surprised to see a huge orange drop cap (.047mfd) on the bridge pickup and some electrical tape in key places on the wiring to the phase switch.

I'm hoping that what's been done is simply the addition of the orange drop (these were not standard, the original cap is .033mfd at the bridge, .022mfd at the neck) and snipping some wires and taping them up to bypass the coil tapping and phase switching.

Is there anything in the photos to indicate otherwise? I want to take this to a shop and get it rewired to spec but want to know what I'm asking beforehand.

Ultimately, the guitar is in awesome shape (no fret wear, excellent condition hardware--even the rubber over the toaster pups is nice and supple).

I picked up my T-60 yesterday. The pickups reportedly didn't work, but when I got it home and plugged it in, I noticed that the neck pickup "sort of" worked. Anyway, I immediately pulled the pickguard and can say that there is nothing like that godzilla capacitor on my guitar.

I just discovered this forum and it looks like a wealth of information. Since we're both onto the same project, let's share notes.

Gorgeous T-60. Since you have the original specs, and someone has already messed with it, just clean it up and start over. Here's the original diagram that I have: (Right-click this and save it.)

P.S. Peavey did something that's both interesting and strange with the T-40/60. Both humbuckers are "split" when the tone controls are all the way "up." That is, they are both single coils. As you roll the tone control down, they "morph" into humbuckers. If you want to eliminate this functionality, and just make it a straight dual-humbucker guitar, then simply don't connect the two red wires to the tone pots. Furthermore, if you don't find the phase switch useful, it can be easily mod to "split" the humbuckers instead. But that's another post.
