How do I get up to speed on the tone I want?

Post by functionform » Fri Jun 14, 2019 9:00 am

I just got a new used strat. For now, I want that 60s Jimi sound, and classic SRV 80s (pride n joy, little wing) sound as well and then maybe that a few select old bands like Byrds, Zombies.

How do people make configurations? Is there an equipment guide somewhere for various artists? Are we just supposed to know that artists used a certain type of amp, compressor etc or scour wikipedia for lists?

There are many factors.....

Strats come equipped with numerous different pickups.

What strings were used by your heroes ?

What pedals were used ?

Tunings.....standard versus custom tuning !

Study your heroes on-line to find particulars.

First off.....a great deal of a player like Jimi or Dave Gilmour's tone does NOT come from their gear. It comes from their hands.
Jimi could play a POS 60's Teisco into a solid state amp and there would be no mistaking who you're listening to. That being said,
as has been mentioned, do your homework. Study your hero's rigs. You'll never perfectly nail a Marshall or Hi-Watt stack and analog
stompboxes like those guys used, BUT ReValver has good sims of most everything you need to closely achieve those tones. Learning how to
sculpt a tone is like learning how to play itself....it takes practice. Now get to it and, if you haven't already......RTFM!!

Oh....and Google is your friend.
