Black Widow Speaker reparible Failures

Post by wwallusa » Tue Nov 12, 2013 3:55 pm

FYI.
For those that don't know. The failure of older Black Widow Speakers that causes the speaker cone to lockup is the deterioration or the foam filter located in the magnet structure. This filter starts falling apart depositing foam rubber between the voice coil and the magnet structure. This rubber melts and sticks to the voice coil locking up the voice coil and speaker cone.
If this is the case for your failed Black Widow carefully dissemble your speaker and look inside the voice coil. If you see a buildup of this material it can be removed with automotive carburetor cleaner and a soft cotton cloth. The next very important step is to remove this same melted rubber from the magnet structure as well. This step is a little more time consuming since this gap is very narrow and requires multiple applications of the cleaner and cloth using a small thin screwdriver to move cloth back and forth in the groove.
Note: If this was the cause of your speaker failure and you decide to replace the speaker basket anyway, failure to clean the grove in the magnet structure will result in unsatisfactory results.
Following the cleaning procedure can give you many more musical years out of your old Black Widows. :)

use the cleaner sparingly , it can melt away the varnish coating from the coil , its supposed to melt away gasoline residue - varnishlike material .
when you decide to put back a foam , mount it on the outside of the screen , the same function of filtering dust but you see it when it disintegrates or eaten by cockroach .
