EQ subs?

Post by GSXcite » Tue Dec 25, 2012 2:26 pm

Given the range that subs operate, is there a benefit to them having their own EQ. I run IPR'S for FOH and subs using the amps crossover, with EQ's on the mains.

I have crused a few post never seen anything on EQing just subs. ( Disclamer.. BIG systems subs are a huge complext world I have not visited ) Im a novice talking "bar band' Outher than things such as crossover point (basic but imporant) makeing shure you are not produceing a bunch of un wanted freqs i.e. low rumbel from vocal mikes ( fans on stage seem to be a big cause.) Running low cutts on everything that is not produceing wanted low freqs is a good idea. I use low cutts on everything except kick, bass gutiar and large floor tom. Have found at times roaling off a little of the VERRY bottom of FOH will clean up the thump and make it more defined loseing verry little low end "feel " and also gives the amps a little more head room. Im shure someone with more knowlage can give a much more informative awnser. With my simple system (2 way X over , subs and tops, under 10k watts) Im keeping it basic. A good Xover, listen carefully, dont let it clip!! Im just EQing subs as part of overall FOH EQ curve. But Im just a novice and shure Im missing a lot. Someone will chime in and get us up to speed. Good Day.

Personally I usually run my system EQ before the crossover, so in my world no, they don't get their "own" eq, that's when I'm just taking the subs off the main mix. If I'm running aux-fed, it depends on what I'm using to do the low pass filtering, but usually the low-pass filter level and slope settings provide enough EQ for me so they don't end up with any "traditional" eq.

YMMV, and those more knowledgeable than I may have different opinions.

Thanks for the replys. I was thinking since I have the FOH EQ, it would be good to go.
