Peavey VYPYR 2 instrument channels presets

Post by Allan » Sun Oct 17, 2021 11:39 am

Hi - My VYPYR 2 guitar amp has started to develop a problem. As I was playing a gig recently, using the instrument selection button C, (acoustic channel), things started to crackle and the amplification stopped. The 4 instrument type preset buttons A/B/C/D (just on the right of the input socket) suddenly stopped working as they should. Now, when I switch the amp on, I still get the LED flashing lights "set-up" display, but I can't physically depress (click down) button B (electric 2). The other buttons all click after finger depressing, but button B doesn't actually move at all. With a jack plug out, none of the buttons allow a selection, but with a jack plug inserted, only button B lights up. The amp will actually allow me to use some presets, but not the one I want on the C button setting. Is this a repair job for an reasonably handy person, or is it for a specialist amp. repairer?

Lets say the problem is that button B broke, it lost its click.

The schematic says it switch S17.
Peavey part: 31322542
Description: vertical tact switch 6x6mm

Contact Peavey and see if you can buy the part.
That will determine if you can try the repair yourself.

The easiest solution might be to invest in a sanpera pedal making the button superflous. Sanpera II pedals can be pricey but a used Sanpera I can be had fairly inexpensively.
For me, I would never try to gig w/o my Sanpera II.

Hi...
I realize that this thread is over one year old but I want to contribute a solution that worked for me when I had a similar problem. It is possible and easy to simply replace the switch. I ordered a bag of twenty switches (6x6x13) from the AliExpress site (China).

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/22558009 ... _shipto=US .

The cost was less than $5. While I was waiting for my order to arrive (5 weeks) I disassembled the chassis so I could get to the switches. Then, without un-soldering the switch from the board, I disassembled the switch. To disassemble the switch I used a sharp Exacto blade to carefully shave off the 4 little plastic rivets melted to the 4 corners of the switch that hold it together. Then I could easily pry it apart. I found that the little metal spring disc was oxidized so I used some 1000 grit sandpaper to clean it up. I reassembled the switch and used a TINY drop of superglue on the outside of each corner at the rivet to secure the halves back together. Do NOT get any superglue inside the switch! This fix WORKED. A few months later a different button started acting up and I used one of the replacement AliExpress switches and swapped it in by soldering. My self-repaired switch is still on the board and working fine.
