Could poor sustain be an amp problem?

Post by Jim.jones » Mon Nov 26, 2018 1:31 am

Hey there,

Peavey vypyr pro owner here. Still very new to electric guitars.

I have a problem, which is very obvious on the clean amp models. The high e string has less than two seconds sustain before dropping off a cliff. Really noticeable when fretting at the 7th and 9th. If you try and let a D chord ring out, it breaks up rather quickly. I'd attach a sound file if I could.

The guitar has recently been set up by a luthier (3 days ago), and not just some guy at a store. It is also a fairly expensive guitar, over 3k in Australian dollars.

Could this be an amp problem?

This is exactly what I was going to mention. Beat me to it.
The Vypyr noise gate has a lot to do with sustain (or the lack thereof).
Lefty guitars: Gibson SG standard (1977)•Gibson LP custom (1979)
Amps : Mesa Boogie Mark IV•Mesa Nomad 45•Mesa TA-30•Vypyr tube 60+Sanpera I
Other: Effectrode Blackbird•Kingsley Jester•AMT SS11-a•Weehbo JCM Ltd.•Zoom G5•J.Coloccia Big Cannoli
