Vyper 2 USB recording with Mac

I can't get a strong signal from the USB connection on my Mac into Garage Band.
I can't get any kind of signal from the USB connection on my Mac into Pro-tools.

Pro-tools is running through an M-audio breakout box, and I can't find any way to change to a USB source.
I tried Garageband out of desperation, but only got a very weak signal.
In the system pref's sound panel, the Vyper shows up as a source, but without any controls, like volume.
Same thing in my Audio/Midi controls.

How do I get this thing to work?
