H-5 Cherry bomb

Post by thenosboss » Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:10 pm

I need a harmonica mic for an upcoming gig. The H-5C is available in Australia.
Can anyone explain why it comes with a mini XLR to 1/4" jack cable...??? Is it a TRS jack...???.
Would this mic need to be connected to a high impedence 1/4" input on a mixer....or could I use an adaptor 1/4 into an XLR on the multicore stage box & into a XLR on the mixer...???

Thanks.....Brad

The reason it comes with a 1/4" unbalanced cable is that over here in the States about 90% of harmonica players play through a guitar amp on stage. The sound guy then mic's the guitar amp.

You could try it with a direct box. I'm not sure whether the mic will have enough signal for you, but it's worth a shot.

Yes, I also thought about a DI box.....I could also try a mic preamp...I have a couple of Carillon tube pre-amps.
When you say the harmonica players plug into a guitar amp.... is this to get the 'special' guitar amp sound or just convenience.....or do they actually use one of the guitarists amps at the same time as the guitarist is using it...???

Hi Brad

Yes, they could use one of the guitarist amp, but from my experience, Harmonica players usually prefer an old, small tube amp , low wattage, and low watt speaker, 15-40 watt, not only are they after the tube sound, but also, the speaker break up. Your tube preamps could work fine, it just might not be the sound they are after. Some are as peticular as guitar players about their sound. If that is the case though they should bring their own amp.

What Troy said. This gives you another reason to buy a Classic 30 or even try to find a Valveking Royal 8 to your backline goodies.

I have the Cherry Bomb, and I'm happy with it for the most part, but I could be happier. Main thing I wanna do is replace the element in it with one that has more vintage, ballsy tone. But to do that, I need to know what I'm working with in the area of the mic's volume-pot and impedance transformer. Does anyone happen to know the specs on these things?
