Power Amp Reccomendation

Post by lilgmoore » Thu Jun 27, 2024 4:06 pm

Good Afternoon,

We are planning upgrades to our church's media infrastructure within a limited budget. Specifically, I am considering purchasing 2-3 PV 12M 2-Way Floor Monitors. Could you recommend a suitable power amplifier for this setup? We definitely don't need anything blowing up :D :D

Any amp that puts out between 250 - 500 watts would work fine. You can damage a speaker with most any amp if try hard enough; nothing is bullet proof.

Are you wanting each monitor to have a separate mix? If your mixer has at least 3 Aux channels, then if you get 3 monitors, each has it's own mix, and this would require 3 amplifier channels as well... so you would have to buy 2 "stereo" amps - that gives you 4 channels, so one channel of one amp wouldn't be used, or you could use that extra channel for something else, maybe a subwoofer if your system doesn't already have one... but then getting a sub in the same power range as your main speakers may or may not have enough power from that amp to play well. I go to a small church, and we have one channel of the otherwise monitor amps running a sub, and that works well for us as we don't need something big.

Do you have a recommendation for specific models of stereo amps that would work well within the 250-500 watt range for this setup? Additionally, what considerations should I keep in mind if I decide to use the extra channel for a subwoofer?

The Peavey IPR2 2000 would be just enough power to run the monitor speakers, and it could handle 3 monitors on one channel just fine, but using the second channel to power a subwoofer might not be enough power - subs are very power hungry. The Peavey IPR2 3000 would be a little more power and still be in the power range of the monitors and could power a sub on the second channel so long as you aren't trying to drive it to max power... if it's for a small church, then it should work great. My church has a single, old Peavey 118 sub that is fed only 250 watts and it works fine for the 130 person capacity room. If you need more sub than a single 18", a dual 18" with the same power amp will get you more output than trying to max power a single 18"
