Crest Pro9200 repairable?

Post by brandonb1045 » Sat Mar 12, 2022 2:08 am

My 2004 Crest Pro9200 decided to let out the magic smoke today after soundcheck. It produced an awful noise, we heard a pop, and it tripped its breaker. I opened it this evening to find the attached damage to the circuit board. I was hoping that it would just be a power supply on a separate circuit board, but apparently the whole amp is basically once circuit board. As someone with some experience repairing electronics, this circuit board might be beyond repair. Maybe someone from Peavey/Crest could chime in? If that's the case I might just replace the whole amp.

A little alcohol on a Qtip will clean off most of the soot, so we can see what is actually damaged and what just looks dirty. I am not remotely going to get into trying to lead this repair along over the emails. Crest and friends are not watching the forum for tech requests. You should contact Crest support directly.

There are obvious burnt parts here, but resistors don't burn up om their own, so something else is shorted, usually a semiconductor . And this may have spread. Damage in a channel can back up into the power supply. Especially if this model has an SMPS.

They haven't replied to my email yet and I just get voicemail when I call the service center. I have since bought two more 9200's for my upcoming gigs as I doubt this unit would be repaired in time.
