Speaker Question for ‘86 Backstage Plus?

Post by BigToeify » Tue Feb 04, 2025 2:32 pm

Hi all. First post here. Just picked up a 1986 Backstage Plus for $25. All is well so far except for some scratchy pots and some dust. I had this exact same amp when I was a teenager in the late 80’s so I am familiar with it. Speaker question: I like the speaker it sounds like I remember but I was wondering if say an Eminence Legend 1058 would improve the overall sound. I’ve read a few online posts where people are highly recommending this as a replacement or swap. If there will be not much of a difference then there is not much point to swapping. I am not unhappy with the current sound but with all the speaker choices these days I was thinking if I can help the amp reach its potential. Thoughts on this particular speaker with this amp. Any real world users or thoughts in general. Very excited to have this amp again after so many years.

I recently picked up one of these as well. Like you I da one back in the 80s. It was my first amp.
I haven’t changed the speaker out, but I did add a speaker jack to it for an extension cabinet.
The amp sounds great connected to a simple 112SX (silver stripe cabinet with a Sheffield 1230).
I have a 10” Scorpion that I want to swap into it to check, but I haven’t done that yet.
