Peavey PR12 Crossover Frequency

Post by Arena Audio Addict » Sun Apr 05, 2020 11:23 pm

I was at this arena working the audio and it has four Peavey PR12 speakers in a cluster. The sound was very muddy and lacking treble, like the horn tweeters were dead. Does anyone here know the approximate crossover frequency of the PR12?

id say probably in the 1500 to 1800 hz range and id say odds are better that all 4 horn drivers are blown rather than the crossover.

they also might have a bulb or fuse for protection which hopefully goes before the driver.

pr12s are the lower expensive line of peavey they are decent but i dont really think for $400 a speaker they was made to play a arena

believe it or not they would have been better off with 2 sp line speakers $600 each
better quality
handle more power 1000 program each over 4oo program each pr12
better and clearer dBs
less chance of freq cancellations.
and i believe the option to bi amp .

the crossover has a ptc rxe030 in series with the compression driver coil . But no resistor-bulb accross it .
both can go -the coil and the ptc when overdriven long time.

I'm sure its a lot higher than 1800 lol. The PR15 seems to be at 3000Hz so the PR12 is at least 3000 or higher. I'd say the 3000-4000Hz range?

you do realize it also has an compression eq in the crossover that allows a better response and performance with the rx14 drivers?
i believe it also has a small delay (0,813ms) at least the rx44t does.

remember i am only trying to help with what experience i have gained over the years running PAs with external xover systems with peavey speakers.
i dont know about the pr12s but more so the sp lines and up (which in my experience is with )freq 1500-1800hz worked best for me . more so towards 1800hz . but feel free to run it at what ever you want.

however what i find on the peavey spec sheet for a rx 14 horn

"DESIGNER NOTES:
The RX14 driver is designed for use between
the frequencies of 1.5 kHz to 20 kHz. However,
in our experience as crossover designers
for commercial applications, optimum driver
performance and reliability can be achieved if
the engineer limits the crossover design to 2
kHz as compared to the 1.5 kHz lower limit of
the driver

now what the horn design and the comp eq setting is for that series speaker/driver and what it does to the freq crossover setting i dont know.
personally i'd say its probably 1800- 2000hz .

good luck .
