Enclosures certified for flying?

Post by DMahalko » Thu Apr 18, 2013 9:20 am

While reading a Peavey speaker specification page, I see this:

"Peavey does not supply hardware required for the manufacturing of flying systems, and recommends that builders should not suspend or fly any enclosure not certified for such applications."

So which Peavey speaker enclosures can be flown?

Search Peavey.com for "suspended" -- no results.
Search Peavey.com for "suspension" -- no results.
Search Peavey.com for "suspend" -- no results.
Search Peavey.com for "flying" -- no results.
Search Peavey.com for "fly" -- 1 result only: "Versarray™ 112 Fly Bar-Blk"
Search Peavey.com for "rigging" -- no results.
Search Peavey.com for "rig" -- nothing relevant.

.

So, what should I try next?

You should only fly loudspeaker which have factory provided fly points (or rigging points) built into them. Also, you should only use rated forged hardware to fly these loudspeakers.

The following loudspeakers can be flown, but should only be flown by people who are familiar with what it takes and what is safe. I've seen way too much unsafe stuff out there to feel remotely comfortable telling anyone to just go do it.
Versarray 112
Versarray 212
Versarray 218F
QW-2F
QW-4F
(There are more, but none in the EU or SP line)

So, Peavey has built quite a number of "flyable" loudspeakers over the years. There are not a whole lot of them available right now, but a quick browse of the basement can show quite a number of options.

It would probably help us out a lot if you were to tell us what you are trying to do.

Here is a little list I just tossed together, it is not all inclusive, but it is a brief list of many of the models of loudspeakers that Peavey has made that are either flyable or designed to be attached to something. Pretty much every single one of these has a spec sheet available in the basement. To start developing this list, I opened a my web browser and brought up Google's web page. In the search field I typed "suspension site:www.peavey.com" and I got 12 pages of solid hits like these listed below. Then I filled in a little bit by going to the websites listed below and browsing the loudspeakers that are available there.

Suspension by use of brackets:

However, if you are looking for current products that are available for sale that are flyable, you may want to see these web pages:
Peavey
Architectural Acoustics
Then browse through the "Enclosures" section and see what is available. The ones that are flyable will say so and it will tell you what kind of hardware you need to fly it.

Have fun and good luck!

(EDIT: Whoops, looks like we both had the same Google search idea at the same time. Posts deleted.)

I've been doing some more research, and what I've found is that Peavey's built-in site search is basically terrible. Google site search does a much better job of things.

Right, so what are you trying to do?

Did you find an answer to your question yourself?

Care to share it with the rest of the class?

That's for another thread I think. This thread is now already an incredibly useful Googlable resource for anyone else looking for flying / suspension product lines from Peavey.

Thanks for the help Steve!

I wasn't sure if there was a fly version of that one or not. I'm glad to hear that there is.

Actually, there isn't any more. The QW3 was discontinued a few years ago. In the QW range there is still the QW2F, however.

Josjor - they're out there. Not exactly a cornucopia, but they're out there.

When buying any used cabinet, if they are advertising "3F", ensure that the cabs have bolts on the top.

Cheers,
Steve

I meant discontinued at the factory. There may be a few dealers with some old stock and of course, there is used.
