Plus when a new person asks a question after reading it allows areas to be clarified for all, sometimes even an old dog at these will be reminded on something they might have overlooked or forgot. or we can even learn a new way of achieveing what we want to do.

Stryker - that is exactly what I am trying to foster. A common ground (no pun intended) for all to reference when asking questions or defining terms. I know the pamphlet is not a panacea nor is its mastery an automatic license for the KTTK (keys to the kingdom as Marty would say). However, it will give both new guy and old dude a common reference.
Reading is FUNdaMENTAL.

Re: Peavey Answer Book Series: Sound Systems
Awesome post. I just joined a couple of days ago and was just today thinking of asking the forum if there were any books that could be recommended. This is like an answered prayer before I even asked. A lot was review but still plenty of fresh knowledge here. Can't wait to find a copy of the SRM and dive into deeper waters yet.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Peavey Answer Book Series: Sound Systems
There are a few good references out there, and I have mentioned them many times in other posts, and I stress, I do not get kickbacks.
The Sound Reinforcement Manual, 2nd Ed, by Davis
Live Sound Reinforcement, by Stark
And for SR at the 400 level: Sound Systems Engineering, by Davis & Patronis
The first two are usually bundled with a third SR book at Amazon for ~$50.
LSR is more easy to read, more of a "what do these ______ do?" sort of approach. Lots of pictures. Good small section on compressors/compression.
Read LSR and then if you are to continue down this path, read SRM. SRM is often referred to as the "industry bible." It has enough math and detailed explanations to answer the "why" - which every professional should be asking. Understanding what is happening to the signal mathematically is the ONLY way to fully understand what is going on.
I tell people to read SRM like this: start at the beginning of the chapter, read until it gets hard, and then skip to the beginning of the next chapter, read until it gets too hard, repeat until brain gets full. Let it sit for awhile and then start over, skimming the first parts of the chapters until you get to the harder areas and continue on in the same way as the first read.
SSE, however, is a definite college level text and should not be taken lightly. The preface kicked my a$$ until I went back and busted some rust off some old math skill sets.
Don't forget the Peavey White Paper section too!
Most of all, have fun!

Re: Peavey Answer Book Series: Sound Systems
thanks for posting this booklet, Steve, great find!
Re: Peavey Answer Book Series: Sound Systems
Thanks for this primer Steve.
Lot of stuff I've wondered about covered in this booklet.
I've turned money into noise with car audio for a long time but this has been a completely different ball game with a steep learning curve.

Glad you are finding it useful. Any questions on that book, please let us know.
Always good for us to bust the rust off basic topics.
During helicopter test flight briefings, I would ALWAYS brief my crew that if I couldn't properly explain/teach what I wanted to do with the helicopter, that I had no business thinking about doing it in the first place.
Cheers,
Steve

wow . talk about a reminder from the past. i sometimes wonder how marty. sempfer, and some of the older crew are doing ,
Re: Peavey Answer Book Series: Sound Systems
Was just reading this article. My guess is Marty who wrote it is part of the "old crew" your referring to.

I saw Marty yesterday, he stopped by the office to say hi. He is doing fine, enjoying retirement, and is a self proclaimed "couch potato".... That said he will be as usual playing Santa in local holiday events this year, sponsored by the VFW and City of Meridian. He also enjoys volunteering for the local Salvation Army, ringing bells in his Santa suit. Some couch potato.......
