ID this Grind 5 Please.

Post by Wyli-E » Mon Jan 14, 2019 10:59 am

After a week of searching I can not find any info on this bass. Non "scooped", non sticker serial number, and has what I have seen called "powerplate" on the headstock. So Any takers? Ser: CNBEA170017

@Wyli-E

Does it actually have the Peavey logo on the headstock ?

A few years back I was trying to find which factory in Vietnam made the Grind,the search turned up a no-logo Grind with the powerplate but I never got the factory address or name.

It always puzzled me. Production of Grinds moved fron Vietnam to China then Indonesia but none of those had the powerplate.

Can you provide any more info like how long you've owned it ? Some more photos would help,esp the bridge area and the back of body.

Cheers kb

New to me. Logos are under the clear coat on the headstock, unless they are silkscreened on. Serial and Vietnam are silkscreens. No other identifying marks anywhere. Hope these help, and thanks for the reply as I find your example intriguing as well as to why no logo

That's very nice and very confusing :D

My old Vietnam Grind has Hartley's signature at the top of the peghead then Peavey Grind BXP in the centre. These and the S/N are in black.
Another difference is the harpoon hook doesn't have the back bevel like yours'.

I can think of a couple of reasons for the differences, Since USA production was stopped about 8 year back there's no point in the "BXP",all basses now are BXP. The Gold logo and placement are what's currently used on the Grind basses.

The back bevel is interesting as the only Peaveys I've saw with it were made in China. All 3 of my Zodiac's have that bevel as does my Chinese Millennium. Might seem a minor point but that's an extra process in manufacture,quickly dropped if it was all about profit :) You hear some folks dismiss Chinese guitars and that's nuts, Peavey chose to make the Sarzo Cirrus and the Ellefson Scorpio sig basses in China. You don't hear folks complain about those :mrgreen:

Strange as it may seem but updating product specs on their site has never been a Peavey strongpoint, on their Grind page there's no mention of the Power Plate.

I just looked at the Sweetwater page and while they don't stock the 4 or 5 string Grinds the 6 string version (made in Indonesia) has the Power Plate.The plate is also on a new 5 string listed on Reverb (again Indonesian built),the harpoon hook bevel is present too.

My guess is your Grind has the up to date specs but production was moved from Vietnam due to higher labour costs.
