T 40 Problems

Post by argylesocks » Sun Nov 06, 2011 10:52 am

I got a 1980 T 40 bass for cheap. The bridge pickup doesn't work and the neck pickup's output is extremely low. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

Depends on whether you wish to keep it "stock" or "modded".

Finding original PUP's could be difficult versus acquiring and installing aftermarket pickups.

Research: Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Etc.

Dang I was hoping there was a way to check if it was the wiring....I'd prefer to keep it stock although I could do without the phase switch.

Well, could try replacing the wiring and switches first. Then if that isn't it replace the pickups. Wouldn't hurt to have new switches and wiring anyway.

You can pop the hood and see if there are any wires hanging loose. I can email you the correct wiring diagram if you want to double check everything while you are in there. PM your email address to me if you want the diagram.

I had this issue on both of the original pickups in my T40 bass. What I found was the coil tap solder joint broke on the ahead of the ground point. This made the pickup have an internal open circuit. I tried to repair the first pickup but my solder iron was too hot and melted through the coil wire. The second one I succesfully repaired. I replaced the broken pickup with one I found on eBay.

When the pickups were going bad on my T40, there were times when it would go out. You could push down on the pickup and it would come back. The coil taps are on the D string side inbetween the coils. That is where I could press to bring the pickup back.

Thanks I think I am going to just rewire it and get rid of the coil tap. I think I'll put the input jack there instead. I will get started on it today and hopefully all will go well. I'll check out the ground on the coil tap first though.
Thanks!

The coil taps are controlled on the tone knobs, not the switch. The second switch controls phase between the pickups.

OK...just making sure you're modifying what you wanted to modify.

FYI...Chris Todd (the orinigal designer of the T-series guitars) has said before that he wished they did the coil tap more traditionally because in order to have the humbucker the tone is rolled back. You can not acces the true humbucker full out tone with the original circuit deign. Most of the times he says he just snips the red wire because it is more hassel to rework the tap onto a switch.

Which red wire?
There is a red wire coming from each pickup to it's relevant tone pot.

Snip that and the humbucker loses the single coil tap and you gain more control over tone :D
