Seeking Advice on Upgrading the Pickups in My Peavey Bass Guitar

Post by samosaforward » Mon Sep 16, 2024 11:40 pm

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to upgrade the pickups in my Peavey bass guitar and would love some advice from those who have experience with this. My current setup is fine, but I’m aiming for a more versatile sound with better clarity and punch, especially for recording purposes.

What are your recommendations for high-quality replacement pickups that work well with Peavey basses?
Are there specific brands or models that you’ve had a particularly good experience with?
How much of a difference have you noticed in tone and performance after upgrading pickups?
Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Best,

Best,
It depends on the pickups. Folks hope throwing money on some buzzword brand name will solve all issues but that's rarely true.

Swapping one split coil or single coil for another and placing them in the same position brings little to the table. Even swapping say a single coil for a stacked humbucker changes very little. Took me years before I accepted this, have easy 40 bass pickups in drawer as evidence

Today's modest recording set ups and software are far more versatile than any pickup or bass you own.
Axcelerator,B-90,B-Quad,Cirrus,Dyna,Dyna/Unity,Foundations,Forum,Fury,Gbass,Grind,International,midibase,Milestone III, Millenniums,Patriot,Resolite,RJ-IV,Sarzo,3 T40,T45,T20,TL-5,Tragic,Unity,Void,Zephyr5,3 Zodiac.

It’s because you haven’t found the correct bass-pickup combination yet….keep trying!
😂

Found it long ago but was too stubborn (dumb) to admit it

I'm basically a 51 P-bass player though I've built basses with Filtertron, Bi-Sonic, Chi-Sonic, mudbucker Sidewinders, split-coils and T-bird humbuckers in place of the single coil. While I always return to my single coil basses I've experimented with the single coil footprint. Had stacked and split coil arrangements made, dual poles like a jazz bass, huge MM style slugs, blades. Went with ceramic mags, ALNICO 2 and 5, Neodymium, even had a quad coil ALNICO/Neodymium. Varied the wire count too with DCR running from 6.75k ohm to 29k ohm.

Buried myself so deep in the pickup swapping rabbit hole I near wound up in Australia
