Today I striped the failing old oak stain and finish from the T-27 body I started working on. I heard and read that the bodies of theses guitars as in the T series guitar were a oak hard wood but that can not be the truth unless certain one were oak. This old T-27 appears to be possibly as I am not a pro on wood types but, more like a white ash or even a spruce pine. Has a few knots and streaks that reminds me of spruce pine. It only weighs 4.2lbs and I think ash this size would be heaver. Not very dense as oak would be more like a spruce or pine.
So I personally would say they were not made of oak unless someone can tell me different.
Cheers

Re: Peavey T-27 Wood?
Looks like the typical northern ash that they used in T series natural guitar.
Your sanding looks good. What color are you going for?

Re: Peavey T-27 Wood?
Hi, I believe you are right about the wood, a local wood supply store said it looks to be a white ash. I am thinking now most of the information I have read on this natural style Peavey guitar was maybe they meant that the finish was done in Golden Oak finish not made of oak. So now that I have striped off the old finish down to the raw wood I stained it with some Golden Oak and it looks to be almost as it did before I striped it but much nicer. So I was wrong about the wood but the white ash looks extremely nice with its new coat of stain. I will finish off when the weather get a little warmer with some Mohawk instrument lacquer and buff out latter.
I still have to go a long ways on this T-27 as in finding a neck or one that fits the scale and making a pick guard from wood if I can find a template and installing some nice electronics, should be a good player.
Thank you for your reply
Cheers

Re: Peavey T-27 Wood?
I think the finish that you are seeing on the original is just aged darkness. Peavey kept the production of the natural finish as low cost. I remember when these were new they were lighter colored. I bet it was just an oil clear coat and done from the factory.

Re: Peavey T-27 Wood?
According to the T-27 Owner's Manual (https://assets.peavey.com/literature/ma ... 370333.pdf) they are "finished with our special polyester-urethane material in a natural finish or one or our optional custom colors."
My experience in using clear polyurethane finishes is that they do tend to darken with age, especially with exposure to light. It's just part of the nature of working with wood.
I think the golden oak stain you have chosen looks pretty good, but the color will tend to darken over time too. I would put a clear polyurethane finish on it and buff it to a high gloss.
Good luck on your project!

Re: Peavey T-27 Wood?
I used a poly tung oil (not real tung oil) before on a few guitars and it gives a pretty nice hand rubbed finish but not real glossy. My plan was to use that instrument rattle can lacquer that when cured gives a pretty nice gloss and fairly tough finish.
Also the same with the pick guard that I am just finishing, it will be a Walnut color with the same lacquer finish. I still need to trim along the top are of the PG down to were the line is closer to the screws and do the pick up cut outs latter after I find hopefully a set of originals.
The body color is pretty light in color but I presume it will darken with the application of the lacquer, witch I am hoping.
Cheers
The Tele is with Mohawk spray Lacquer buffed out.

Those naturals were Ash.
Painted models were Poplar.
Big difference in weight.
