Original finish?
Original finish?
I jus got a peavey patriot sn 03684481. Someone but a bubba paint job on it. It’s was red I used acetone to remove it and then I hit the original factory finish. It is a clear over very nice wood but it had been sanded thru in some places leaving bare wood. I really want to keep the clear finish but not knowing what type of clear paint was used by the factory when originally manufactured I would be facing a full sand job that I would prefer to avoid. Does anyone have an idea of what the original finish is so I can pick a similar or compatible clear coat to use in a refinish job. All suggestions are welcomed
Re: Original finish?
There are multiple patriot models. Id recommend posting a pic of yours.
Re: Original finish?
Do you think the factory would have used different types of paint on the same model guitar ?
Re: Original finish?
Yes, they certainly did. You mentioned a clear finish beneath the Previous Owner's (PO) "improvements." Generally speaking, clear finishes are referred to as varnish while opaque colors are referred to as paint. The early Patriots had both.
I owned a mahogany bodied Patriot that had a clear matte finish. I've seen photos of other Peavey guitars with ash bodies that were also finished clear and I assume that they had a matte finish too. I've also seen these same Patriots for sale in colors, too (black appears to have been popular).
These early Patriots had two pickups and a fixed bridge. The later Patriots and only a bridge pickup and had a Tremolo bridge. I don't recall seeing any of those in a clear finish, but the possibility exists. Search eBay and other for sale sites for Patriots and you will see examples of both early and late types.
Take a look at the archived manuals at Peavey's website and you can get more info about the difference in models: https://peavey.com/manualsearch/archived.cfm?page=P The older ones are in the Patriot Plus link, while the later ones are under Patriot with Tremolo. (The link to just plain Patriot goes to the manual for Patriot basses, but the one for Patriot Plus is good for guitars. The difference between the regular Patriot and the Plus is the pickups, maybe just the bridge pickup. The one for the plus has two bars across the bridge and a single one on the neck pickup. The regular Patriot pickups both have a single bar across. Take a look at the illustration on page one of the Plus manual.
Give all that, if you're facing patches of bare wood, you will be better off going down to bare wood for the whole thing instead of trying to get a new finish to adhere to the original finish and bare wood; and match. It will be really difficult to get the spots where there is bare wood to look like the other areas. Look online about finishing wood. Things like sealing the wood come into play, the finish tends to be adsorbed into bare wood. When it comes to finishing wood, or painting a car, 99% of the work is in doing good prep.
On a side note, posting a photo is a really good idea since nobody knows how serial numbers are finished. There is a place to attach files, including photos, in the blue area below. You can browse to the file you want to attach. I seem to recall that you have to have a certain number of posts before you can see this, so don't be discouraged if you can't see that yet. A few more questions should make that show up if it isin't there now.

Re: Original finish?
Thanks for all the info and great suggestions. Will check the archive and. Try to post a picture of what I am trying to work with. Gotta love the forums and the folks that help out and share a wealth of information
Re: Original finish?
I will try to attach photos that shows the original finish which is very smooth and clear vs where it was sanded thru. I would really like to duplicate the original factory finish if anyone knows what it might have been

Re: Original peavey body
This another Peavey body that I hope to save and rebuild. I don’t know what model is from. Might be a T60. It had 6 different coats of paint. Next to a clear base is a very hard yellow paint and I wonder if Peavey ever used that color on a factory guitar. Will try to post before and after. Thanks for all the feedback
