For Sale: Odyssey II Prototype (shipping available)

Post by GoKart Mozart » Sun Feb 18, 2024 12:53 am

I'm selling an Odyssey II prototype. It's a cool guitar but I just dig the Firenza more when I'm wanting to scratch the Peavey P90 itch.
Bought it off Reverb a few months ago; supposedly 1 of 6 Odyssey II prototypes made but the model never went into production. Has the original Peavey gator-skin case with it, same ones that were used on the HP Signature Selects. It's also got the Dual Compression tailpiece that was used on the HP Specials and I believe the same tune-o-matic style bridge that Jim DeCola spec'd out for the Wolfgang & Firenzas.

Image
I'm going to be 100% honest on the condition as I feel the original Reverb listing from when I purchased it was lacking in some areas. Here's the notable cosmetic issues:
1) Missing the truss rod cover
2) Has a small hole in the top; no idea what the story is on that
3) Couple of small dings
4) A previous owner sanded down the back of the neck and in the process reshaped the factory round neck profile to more of a V-shape; the shop that I got it from applied some penetrating oil to seal it and it's been stable as long as I've had it - I've only adjusted the truss rod once during my initial setup (truss rod works fine, btw).
5) The nut was NOT the 1.725" width that was in the Reverb listing; it's much more narrow at around 1 9/16" (1.56"). Not sure if it was like that from the factory or if this was done by the prior owner in conjunction with the sanding of the neck.
6) The previous owner nicked the edge of the body when sanding the neck since there is a spot where the clear coat is gone (see pics).

So if you want a pretty rare prototype and like smaller necks with a V-profile, you'd probably dig this. I'd do $750 or some combination of trade + cash within that range. Local pickup in the Huntsville, AL area; would travel just south of Nashville, if needed. Shipping also available.

These are great guitars. I love the way they play. It looks like that one was played a lot. Ashamed they sanded the neck, the factory profile was a nice 50s thick neck, very comfortable.
Does that hole go into the electronics compartment?

No, the hole goes about 1/2" deep and not into the electronics cavity. Thought it might've been for a Roland synth pickup originally but the placement makes no sense. Who knows...

So Darren, if what I've read online is true, there were only 6 of these prototypes made. Is yours one of these 4? I found these from sold listings on Reverb.

I just looked at your photos again. It’s odd that the one you have isn’t Black. The serial number includes BLK which indicates black finish. However if it was refinished, the headstock would not have been completed like that. Almost makes me think the previous owner had two of these and the control cavity cover got switch. Somewhere out there is a black one with either No serial number sticker or one that has SNBRST after the number.

Yeah, I think the cavity cover just got swapped with a black one.

I uploaded my pics to IMGUR and just used a direct link using the IMG tags.

Based on your research, there are a least seven because the four you found are not either of mine.

Do you know which pickups are in the one you’re selling?
Can you add a photo of the inside of the control cavity?

They're the factory ones, to the best of my knowledge. I took them out when I got the guitar and was cleaning it up and don't recall any markings on the bottoms of them.

Sure, here's a before and after. The wiring was in piss poor shape when I got it; a previous owner had made a mess and bypassed the 3-way switch and was trying to do dual volumes, from the best that I could decipher.

My red one came like it is with the Fender knobs and lollar pickups. The Burst one I changed to the Wolftone pickups. I think the original are like Gotoh or something. But I might have that confused with the Firenza.
I thought they were ok, but the Wolftones sing sweet to me. I’m looking to replace the Lollars with Throbak at some point.
