early 1980's Peavy KB300 speaker connectios.

Post by Parda » Wed Oct 19, 2022 6:44 pm

I just picked up a KB300 made in the early 80's with both the horn and the 15" speaker disconnected from the cuircut board, just bare wires. according to the wiring diagram there should be 2 pins that they should connect too. but when I look at the board there are 3 pins. 2 that look to be male and one off to the side that looks to be female.
How do I re-connect?
The unit does not have any serial tag on the case.
it has 3 channels all of which are 1/4" phone plug. 130 Watts, 23 V RMS, 4 OHM min speaker load.
Weight close to 80 lbs.

I have not opened mine right now, but does the following help?

Looks like the two close pins are the same trace anyway.

If the speaker is a Black Widow (no idea about the Scorpion version), for a neutral reproduction you'll likely want tone controls for bass comparatively neutral, mids 6dB down, treble 5dB up. Putting everything into neutral doesn't work for me, and I've seen classified ads that happen to show the controls in similar positions, so I am probably not alone in my hearing.

The two dark connection (SPKR) act odd. Taking one or the other and going to the Light connection too its left makes the speakers work. What I dont know is why the two dark connections is one or the other better. Do the both go to the Lighter connection?

I wouldn't consider one or the other better: they are connected. I think it's just three pins because the double pin acts as a key for the plastic connector (the one you don't appear to have any more) to get the right polarity. Or it's an extra tap for measuring or connecting things (getting an extra ground is easy in comparison). I've not reopened my KB300 to actually take another look.

At any rate: doesn't look like a point worth worrying about.
