How do you remove the chassis from a Peavey Max 115?

Post by Bcherensky » Mon Nov 05, 2018 4:25 pm

Hi,

How do you remove the chassis from a Peavey Max 115? I just bought a used one and want to clean it, there's nothing wrong with it electronically.

I have many decades of experience with this type of thing, but I'm stumped here. I've removed every possible screw, even the corners and handle caps, and the chassis might as well be welded in. Can't be anything inside the speaker cab since the grille can't be removed without first removing the chassis.

Thanks!

Chassis sometimes stick to the tolex.

Don't forget the top strap handle.

Thanks. Yes, I removed the handle at the same time I removed the six other screws. I think the handle screws into T-nuts anyway, rather than the chassis.

I think you're on the right path with the sticking to the Tolex thing. There's a gasket made of what looks like black weather stripping between the chassis and roof of the cabinet, I think that's what's holding the chassis in place. I'd probably have to get in between the control panel and roof of the cabinet with a putty knife or something and separate the foam, masking off the control panel to avoid damaging it. Then I'd have to replace the gasket before reinstalling the chassis. A pain.

Since I was able to clean around the control panel and have no imperative reason to remove the chassis, I'll let it go until I really MUST remove the chassis.

to remove the section with your inputs and controls, you have to remove the 2 screws on the front of it, and the 4 screws near the front corners that go into little washers. DO NOT remove the carrying strap, as the T-nuts used are very small and can easily be pushed out. the same goes for the speaker itself, do not try to take it out unless you are replacing the driver, as you may end up pressing some of the T-nuts out. if you want to clean under the grill, youll have to remove the 3 (i think, it might have been 1. i didnt bother putting it back on personally.) screws that are beneath the faceplate. the faceplate will stick to the tolex, but dont be afraid to pull it right off. you wont damage the tolex. im unsure what gasket you speak of, as mine dosent have any such thing. while you have it off though, if you plan on keeping the grate on it, id suggest putting a strip of foam sealant or rolled up duct tape in between the grate and front plate, to cut down on the horrible vibration this unit has.

I had the same question regarding opening up a Peavy Max 115 DDT finally figured it out. It was the tolex/adhesive sticking between the the control board and the chassis. The carrying handle does NOT need to come off. The only screws that need to be loosened are the x4 screws (with washers) on top of the cabinet. Then I gently used a flat screw driver (or similar) to gently separate/pry the tolex/adhesive between the control board from the cabinet. Once loose the board can be pulled out and flipped upside down on the cabinet NOTE: you may need to gently pull up the wires for some slack where the wires go into the cabinet in order to flip the electronics over. You dont need to take off the corners if the cab or the grill, however when your trying to flip the control board and move it around, the edge of the grill cover is sharp so you might want to cover it with something in order to avoid scraping up the wires.
