Replace Old Amp Capacitor

Post by OmarLassiter » Wed Feb 12, 2025 9:17 pm

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and have a small question for you to answer.

My question is, when replacing capacitors in an amplifier, is it necessary to use high quality or "audio grade" capacitors? I have noticed some members here mentioning that the audio signal passes through these components, which leads me to believe that using better capacitors can make a difference in sound quality. However, the cost of audio grade capacitors is quite a bit higher than standard capacitors.

Thanks for any comments. :D :D

Not sure what audio grade capacitors are, but keep in my mind that amp manufacturers often use whatever is cheap/available at the time, much of it doesn't even have a brand. When replacing caps, if you go with brand name stuff you're already upgrading, like from Illinois Capacitors (which Peavey uses), Vishay, Orange Drop. I've used different ones from cheapos to mid-rangey stuff. Some can get real expensive, those I haven't tried.

I never sink money into the so called hi grade caps. I've recapped a lot of radios and several guitar amps the last 25 years and never had a cap failure on even the real chap ones due to quality. And I doubt that you can hear the difference between audio grade and good typical caps. It's a guitar amp, not a life sustaining piece of equipment.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.
