bought a new XXX 40wat with EFX, have a question.

Post by hyperslow » Mon Dec 16, 2024 10:11 pm

I just got this amp used today and I am trying to get familiar with it. It sounds pretty good so far but I am having a bit of an issue. I cant seem to turn the efx off. The yellow light is always on no matter what setting I put it on or what button I press. I have tried to hold them down and double press them. The yellow light stays lit and I can only switch between the different effects. i have turned the knobs down to the "off" position but I still hear the efx coloring the tone. Is there a way to turn the yellow light off to fully bypass the EFX?

Do a factory reset. Looks like those are crappy Vypyr type decoders. Those tend to act up. Spray contact cleaner in there.

Thanks for that info. I ordered a can from Amazon. However this is now the least of my worries. The amp no longer makes noise. The two EL34 and the 12AX7 tube on the back side are not lit when the amp is turned on but the red light and the channel lights are. The three 12AX7 tubes on the front side behind the protective power tube cage(I am assuming preamp???) are lit and all glow the same intensity when the power switch is on. All the efx lights are on, I can switch channels I just cant hear anything. No fuzz no tube tapping... complete silence. I put 2 other EL34s out of a working amp in and those didn't light up either. I don't have anymore 12AX7s so I cant check those. T1A fuse shows continuity, so does the ceramic one above it, T10A. The 400ohm 5w also shows continuity on my multimeter. The standby switch also shows continuity if I flip it to the on position. It shows a open circuit if I flip it off. I don't know what a SGR is but in another post it says that might be busted. Anyone know where that is? Could one of the parts I did check still be broken even if it shows continuity on my multimeter? I am not a amp tech so I am a bit scared of shocking myself and testing that 400ohm resistor made me very nervous cuz of my hand placement. I assumed the big blue battery looking thing is the object that will shock me to death and that 400ohm was right next to it. I only used one hand but again never opened an amp before and I don't want to die over 400 bucks. This is a Xmas gift for my teen daughter who is getting into guitar and really improving. So I am pretty screwed if I cant get the guy to give me back my money in the next few days, OR get it fixed and wrapped. Anyone got any advice? Thanks in advance

Could be as simple as the phase inverter tube is busted, that's the 12AX7 in the back, I assume. Change that one, hopefully that'll fix it. Sounds like you checked all the fuses in there. But yeah, the front 12AX7s are the pre amp. The one is the back should be the PI which then sends signal to the power tubes.
