Peavey Classic VTX - Distorted sound issue, please help!!

Post by bw1985 » Wed May 31, 2023 11:19 am

Hi all,

Really hope that some of the Peavey experts on this board can help me bring my Classic VTX back to full health. Right now I've got the issue where the clean channel sounds distorted/fuzzy. I've taken a few steps:

-Replaced all 4558 chips
-Replaced driver transistors Q4, Q5
-Checked for 15v / -15v health
-15v tube bias is present on both

Unfortunately the fuzzy/distorted sound is still present. Could anyone recommend next steps to look into?

I should also mention that the power supply has been re-capped with high quality German made caps.

Thanks so much!
-BW

Just wanted to provide an update to this:

-Replaced Q6 + Q7 and the issue is still present
-Also reflowed solder connections on all pots

SUPER stumped on this one!

I would start from the pre amp output and using my oscilloscope, work my way back along the signal path to where the distortion stops. The component/s directly before the distortion starts, is your issue.
Replace just that faulty component, not change everything and possibly cause many more man made issues.

The age of the amp would make me suspicious of the electrolytic caps. The 2.2uF caps would be the ones that I would look at 1st.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.

Thanks Pappy! I will look into replacing those.
I should also mention that if I plug directly into the Power Amp In, I still get the "distorted/fuzz" sound. Aside from the power supply board itself, there must be something else wrong in the power section.

Thanks for the input. I've replaced every electrolytic cap in the amp and it is still having the same effect unfortunately.
Anyone else have any pointers for me?

Are you using the foot switch? The Normal channel is only accesable by the foot switch.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.
