Peavey Bravo 4558 opamp question
I'm needing to replace the 4558 op amp for the Reverb on my newly acquired Peavey Bravo. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on a type and or brand for it. There was a thread that mentioned a 4558S and I'm not sure what to get. Thanks in advance.
Re: Peavey Bravo 4558 opamp question
I have found that in the reverb circuit any 4558 or 4560 I have tried all sounds the same to me.
More than once I have gone on the pursuit of what opamp is best for what circuit in my Peaveys. I do think some are quieter than others but in a guitar amp, I don't worry to much about it. Out of all the choices I usually reach for what ever 4558 I have on hand.
You can always get a few different versions of the 4558 and try them.

I find the LM4562 does a pretty good job for its price point regarding reverb: it can drive reasonably low impedance and has pretty low noise at low input impedances (which is typical for reverb tanks). And the part has been around long enough to be quite affordable in DIP form factor.

Re: Peavey Bravo 4558 opamp question
I installed the new reverb op amp today and after getting it all back together I turned it on and after a few seconds poof. No pilot light, electrical smell and a little smoke.
I hauled it to the local repair shop believing I had killed it. After getting home depressed I researched and discovered that the culprit was most likely a fuse caused by me forgetting to plug the speaker back up. I picked it back up and headed to Radio Shack for the fuses.
It works perfectly again reverb and all.
I purchased the Bravo 4 months ago for $120, replaced all the tubes, bought a footwitch and repaired the reverb. It's easily one of the best amps I've ever had over the decades. Good old Peavey.

You know, swapping tubes and fuses and other parts and seeing its lights go out and on again is like feeding a stray dog and getting it through illness.
Now it's personal when some household member tells you "why aren't you selling this old thing? What's so special about it?".
Welcome to the party.

Yea, those who don't know "what's so special about it" just don't know. But those of us that do know just smile and "let it slide"!

I appreciate it. Hopefully this amp is all set for its next 32 years of life.
