Classic 30 intermittent

Post by Zap » Mon Feb 06, 2023 11:08 am

Hello,

I've had my Classic 30 for many years, I really can't remember if I have ever replaced a tube in it.

The last few times I played through it, the sound volume would occasionally drop way down, and twice dropped altogether. I initially thought it was a dirty pot on the guitar I was playing, as it sounded like that. Tried another guitar & it did the same thing. I'm assuming its a tube issue, but I know little about this. Amp repair is not my forte.

Should I just replace them all anyway since they are old?

Sorry to be such a noob, but in the past I always had my equipment professionally serviced when need. I now live in an area that makes this difficult.

Next time it acts up give it the Enzo test. Ball up your fist and give the cabinet a good wack. If it comes back to normal or gets worse you probably have a bad connection or broken solder joint some where.

The reverb makes a bad noise when I do that, LOL. :D

That's 2 be expected. The reverb can be turned down or even unplugged. But does it change anything when wacked.

No, it does not. And, it is no longer "intermittent" but now nothing from the cable (yes checked cable). It's got a slight hum to now as well.

It could be a tube has gave up. One other simple thing to try is while the amp is off use your guitar cable and run it in and out of the effects send and return jacks several times. They have little internal switch contacts that can get dirty over time.

That did nothing. I think it smells a little now when it warms up. All the tubes appear to be on.
