Amp advices

Post by gosikiru » Fri Jul 29, 2022 4:19 am

Hello,

I am the happy owner of a Trace Elliot Elf. The 10 speaker cabinet is sensational. In addition to bass, the Elf is great for my Fender Lap Steel guitar. Will it do as well for a regular electric guitar? How well would the Piranha 6505 lunchbox head work the the Elf cabinet?

The weight and tone are the key ingredients here.

Welcome to the forum.

I happen to own both of these amplifiers.

I have not tried an electric guitar through my ELF, only an electric bass. I assumed if using an electric guitar, some of the higher frequencies might possibly be attenuated/eliminated within the ELF circuit. Given your results with your lap steel, I would now expect results comparable to those with your electric guitar.

I typically use my Piranha 6505 with the 8 inch 6505 cab, but as long as they can handle the amplifier's power, instrument cabinets usually cover the frequencies we can hear, so cabinet is a matter of personal preference. One of my favorite tones is my Classic 50 410 sitting on my Classic 115E.

The Piranha is 20 watts into 4 ohms impedance, so you will lose some power into higher impedance cabs. I cannot access my ELF 10 at the moment to check impedance. I have run my Piranha into 16 ohm cabinets, and it sounds fine. I have not actually calculated the reduced power, into what may be more or less efficient speakers for volume, but the tone is fine. Remember half power is not half volume, it is only 3dB down. 10 percent power is half volume, if all other variables remain constant.

I have not tried my Piranha into my ELF 10, but you have me curious so I will have to test that out.
