6505+ Combo Power Resistor Swap

Post by Oversure » Thu Jun 23, 2022 11:49 am

Hi all, I'm going to be changing out the screen resistors on my 6505+ combo to 470ohm (as per a lot of recommendations) but wondered if I would be able to swap out the power resistor as well?

I don't really want to install a choke but have read that a choke has a resistance of around 200ohms, so would I perhaps be able to safely swap out the 400ohm resistor for say a 300ohm?

Wold this has an effect on the sound of the amp at all, is it dangerous? Should I instead be looking to increase the resistance of the power resistor, 1000ohms seems to be common.

Thanks for your help, I've been looking around a few forums to try and find an answer to this but have come up short each time.

And why would you want to do that? It would raise the B+ voltages downstream a few volts. I think a choke is overkill anyway, there is not a ripple problem in these amps. And by not installing a choke, changing the dropping resistor to the resistance a choke might have accomplishes nothing.

Thanks for your help Enzo, I've not seen this discussed anywhere else so not really sure what I would be looking to achieve, but wanted to hear people's thoughts or even if anyone has tried similar.
