Re-tube 6505+

Post by painkillah » Sat Apr 23, 2022 12:17 pm

Hi
i have bought the amp used and the tubes are gone.

I need the Power Tubes and the Pre Amp Tubes new and need help.
I do mostly Metal / High Gain.

my thoughts were:

PowerTubes 6L6 GC JJs

V4- Sovtek 12AX7LPS
V3- Tung Sol 12AX7
V5- Sino (Chinese) 12AX7
V2- Tung Sol 12AX7
V1- JAN Philipp 5751
V6- Tung Sol 12AX7

what are your opinions on that ?
Thanks

I would recommend testing a bunch of tubes to see what you prefer, also perhaps from the same brand to start with if you arent sure what you prefer.

I have just recently spent a half day testing a bunch of preamp tubes in my 6505+ to see what I like the best in this amp

I have all JJ pre and power tubes in another peavey amp but with my 6505+, at the moment Im liking the svetlana 6L6GC and a mix of preamp tubes to lower the gain a bit on the lead channel
V1=mullard 12ax7 I found this to be a bit smoother after swapping out several
V2= JJ 12ax7
V3- JJ 12DW7
V4= JJ 12DW7
V5= JJ 12ax7
V6= JJ 12ax7

and then I add a boost/drive pedal.
This setup is lower gain but a bit tighter to my ears, the 12DW7 work well.
The gain is still there but youll need to turn the gain up to 7+ instead of 4 or 5 or so

Also a high gain 12ax7 would probably suit too maybe in V1 or V2

hi @Dane

Thank you! I will try

What would you do in a Peavey 5150 pre amp ?
right now mine has Sovteks 4x WB and 1 xWA.
With the Sovtek it sounds good, i tried all JJs and that was not good to my ears ...

thanks

If they sound good to you then Id say they are right for your sound

I would just experiment with the V1 position if I didnt have the time to test all positions, as it influences the whole amp the most.
The tubes I use are listed above
