Peavey 6505+ 112 combo - crunch channel doubt

Post by Ivo » Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:03 am

Hello everyone,

Just bought a peavey 6505+ 112 combo used, that I am using in my bedroom. I've noticed something about the amp that I don't know if it is normal or not:

When I am using the crunch mode on the rhythm channel, It just gets so loud past 1 on the "pre" that I just can't push it further to get more distortion/crunch, no matter the level of the "post". Basically, this means that I simply can't use this channel to get the overdriven "Marshally" tones usually advertised on reviews. Additionally, the "pre" on the rhythm/crunch channel seems to act more as volume than a distortion nob, as if I move it slightly the volume will increase significantly. On the other hand, the post button doesn't seem to alter the volume unless I crank it.

On the lead channel, it seems to acts as I was expecting: by moving the pre I get more distortion but not more volume, and by moving the post I get more volume

Any thoughts on this?

Maybe check the V6 preamp tube. That is the tube that effects the crunch channel.
