5150 head vs combo rhythm channel

Post by asabbagh » Wed Sep 15, 2021 8:36 pm

I own a 92 5150 and love it. I have recently tried a 6505 212 combo and noticed that the gain on the rhythm channel is considerably higher.

I have looked at the circuit and noticed some very minimal differences. Notably, the 1khz booster running parralel to the 39k cathode bypass.

I was considering purchasing the combo but the sheer size and ackward rear mounted knobs are turning me off. I love the tone of it and was wondering if I could come close by modding my 5150 to act like the combo.

The combo is clearer and has a dare I say jcm type voicing on the rhythm channel.

Could the output transformer, bias and the cirxuit on v2a cathode be what I am hearing?

The head and combo are just different amps.
