Peavey Transtube 212 EFX

Post by RickyB » Mon Jun 14, 2021 10:02 pm

Hey guys I'm a newby and was hoping I might get some feed back on the 212 Trans tube EFX I picked up recently. The amp comes with the PFC 3 foot switch but I was wondering if I could connect other pedals to the amp as well? Specifically a looper pedal, wah pedal and or maybe even another multi effects pedal? Hope I don't have too many people shaking their heads and laughing at my dumb question. All comments would be greatly appreciated!

You have two effects loops in the amp, one marked effects loop send and return. The other marked preamp out and power amp in. Use them just as you would on ANY other amp to get your effects units into the game.

See if this is the right Owners Manual for your amp: https://peavey.com/manuals/80305014.pdf

Handy to have on hand.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.

Good question. I've never used an effects loop on an amp. I've always just put the pedals in series between the guitar and the amp. What is the benefit and difference of an effects loop?

Well the loop is after most of the preamp. So if you have a delay and a fuzz pedals, if you put the delay out front and the fuzz in th loop, then your echoes are distorted. If you put the delay in the loop, and the fuzz out front, then your distortions get a nice echo.

Generally, overdrive and distortion pedals go out front, while time-based effects like delay, reverb, phase, chorus go in the loop. Of course you can try them any way you like, and if YOU like the results, that is what matters, even if it breaks my rules.

Cheers Enzo, that makes sense. I always thought it weird that you'd put an overall effect through the effects loop in my PA. Like, why would you want to distort the whole band's sound? Now I see that you don't do that. But time based effects make sense. You can change the overall delay and reverb to sound like any room you like.

Many years ago - like 1970 - We had a simple sound system. Basic mixer with no reverb. The guitarist had an Echoplex though. And we played the Nilsson tune Jump Into the Fire. I ran to the stage, grabbed the Echoplex, ran back and patched it into his vocal mic channel. The Echo needed to match the beat of the song.

We had no FX loops, just plugged the Echo into his mic input.
