5150 (1997) Tube Failure & More

Post by ampsandharleys » Thu May 27, 2021 3:21 pm

Hi guys, Im new to this forum and want to thank in advance your welcome.

I was super blessed to pickup a Peavey 5150 from around 97/98 for $200 bucks but it was dead meaning no power except the power light, no standby light, so I put in all good tubes (new) out of one of my Fender amps.

Pulled it out of the head box and took care of the following with parts I had just to see if it would come alive:

1) Replaced that 10watt resistor but with a 470 instead of the 400, it powered up with the standby and tubes lit.

2) Found that there are 4 100 Ohm 5K Resistors (3) had blown so I replaced them amp powered up fine again but still distorted in High Gain input.

3) Plugged into the RETURN of the effects loop and bingo normal tone but obviously without any tone controls.

4) Back Into the normal input jack still distorted. Pulled off 3 ribbon type cables and cleaned them up, at that point lost my sound

5) While the amp was setting i hear this CRACK! I run to the amp and a 1000UF capacitor on the board just beyond the input popped / exploded.

Im back at square one, I have worked on my Fenders but new to the 5150 tone monster.

Any Ideas as far as what I could test / check?

OK, you pulled off a ribbon and after that it blew up a cap. My first suspect is you may have plugged a ribbon cable back on but off a pin one way or the other.

470 instead of 400 will be OK, but 390 would have been closer.

I double and triple checked the cables and they're all properly plugged end to end, meaning there are no exposed pins.🤷🏽‍♂️
