Been a while, but...NAD

Post by The Guitar » Thu May 13, 2021 9:46 am

Scored a Studio Pro 50 a couple weeks ago from an old antique barn. Needed a good contact cleaning with the pots to get that scratchiness out and probably will get a Deoxit cleaning too. Overall it works! I swapped the unmarked 12" for a Fender Special Design Utah 12" and that has spiced it up a little. The only snag is the reverb. Clean, or with gain, the reverb knob acts as an extra high/bright knob. It'll give that buzzsaw sound to the gain and extra brightness with the cleans. I haven't popped the reverb unit out to clean that up...yet! I was also wondering if there are any mods that can be done. I didn't have much luck with Google.

Cleaning the reverb cable connectors and sockets on each end my help. Also take a look at what the opamp driver IC is. I have found that the old 4558 works well in these old Peaveys. That's most likely what it came with.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.

Fixed the Studio's reverb. The ground wire on one of the male ends had broke off. Also took Deoxit to the jacks on the reverb. Then I managed to lose a 4558 when I popped it out and it fell between the porch planks. 😐 So the local electronic shop only had 778As and I snagged the last 2. Popped one in and cleans are fine, but the distortion is kind of buzzy/muddy. It has 3 chip slots and the 778 is in the middle. Not sure what each 4558 chip controls. Should I get another 778 and replace all 3?

Update: Popped in the other 778 and things seem ok. Reverb still acts like a buzzsaw setting with distortion, but is working just fine when the distortion is dialed down. I also have an Arion Tubulator that sounds good through it. 😎
