VTM Owner, 60 or 120?

Post by DieloneK » Thu Feb 11, 2021 12:52 pm

Sup guys, I'm new to the Peavey forums. I'm a Peavey head, and have been my whole life. Started on a Peavey and have owned a plethora of high end high gain amps. But I recently got my hands on an original owner VTM60 and matching 4x12 with celestion G12-k85's. Both look brand new (I am spoiled).

I was originally looking for a VTM120 but because of this deal obviously settled with the 60.

So I figured I'd come here to ask you Peavey people......

What are the tonal differences between the VTM60 and VTM120?
Obviously the volume is barely different, as the 120 only gets a little bit loaded and allows for slightly more headroom.

But are there any differences in tone? Do any of you guys think the 60 is inferior/superior or exactly the same to the 120 tone wise?

Well the amps are identical other than the power tube part.

Just asking, cause I know other 100/120 watt amps that have 50/60 watt counterparts that sound slightly different, whether it be more aggressive or focused. Because obviously the output transformer is going to be different, and some added circuitry to fit 2 extra tubes among some other things, is going to slightly alter the overall tone and not just make it slightly louder.

But idk, maybe with VTMs, the 60 and 120 sound identical?

Just wanted someone who has played both to confirm/deny or explain the differences.

The most obvious difference will be in the bass response. The more watts you have the more bass you get. Bass eats up a ton of wattage. If you're satisfied with the bass response of the 60 you won't need the 120. If you want more the 120 will scratch that itch. Personally, I don't overly value bass in my amps. I
