Upgrading ribbon cables to larger gauge wires in 5150...

Post by Carlos6505+112 » Sat Feb 06, 2021 10:51 am

Is this something worth doing? Ive heard some guys will make their own ribbon cables with bigger gauge conductors. Is this beneficial or worth looking into?

I can't imagine any. What problem do you have that this would solve? What benefit would you expect?

Well my amp is making an intermittent "wind blowing into a microphone" type of noise. I cleaned out all my preamp tube sockets and power tube sockets with Deoxit5. Changed out all the tubes. Same problem. Ive heard that the ribbon cables can cause this but i havent opened up the amp to clean those connections as well.
As soon as I take the amp off Standby it will start making that noise. Literally like steady gusts of wind into a microphone.

I had a similar sound coming from my 5150 combo. Turned out to be a leaking filter cap.
