Peavey / CTS 12820PA12 inch speaker for Pacer

Post by polaris26 » Wed Feb 05, 2020 10:18 am

Hello everyone -

I hope this is the right place to post this - I am the happy owner of a pair of 1975 Peavey Pacers, one with original speaker (12820PA made by CTS and date coded to 1975) and one without a speaker. I am searching for an exact correct speaker for that one to match the first one. I have looked on the usual places online but so far nothing is exactly the correct driver. I believe these speakers were also used in the 1975 Peavey Classic and maybe some Peavey PA applications as well? Mine is the flat-back version square magnet (no circular 'bump' in the center). Other features are a ribbed cone with curved seam, and a large convex dust cap with a vent hole in the center.

If anyone knows a source for one of these in good condition I would be most grateful to hear from you either in the forum or in a PM

Regards,
Dave

My pacer is a 1980 model and it has the Eminence 12820PA in it. My VT Classic also has the Eminence version. It would be interesting to hear them compared side by side.
The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.

Hi polaris26,
I just came across this post while seeing if there was anybody looking for these CTS speakers. I have 4 from an old Peavey column that I gutted. One has a tear in the cone and two reside in a cab that I built, but I have one in good shape that I could bear to part with if you're still looking for one. I tried to email you but the forum wouldn't let me, possibly because I'm a new user. Let me know if you're still on the hunt for one.

I had wondered how much sonic difference there would be between the two manufacturers. I believe I read somewhere that there was an engineering connection between the two companies? I also wonder if the later versions of the 12820PA with the bump on the back allowed for a longer excursion - maybe they were having problems with voice coils crashing?

Regards,
Dave

Might be your on to something. I have an old square flat magnet speaker that came out of a Sunn Alpha 12R amp. The schematic for that amp said to only use that speaker in the sealed cab to keep from over extending the voice coil. The ported version amp called for a different speaker.

I too have read that a lot of Eminence evolved out of CTS. Maybe they did learn from past short comings.

KayakBass, I sent you a message about your leftover pacer speaker.
