Reviving A C20 Combo

Post by JamesPaul » Sat Oct 14, 2017 11:52 am

This C20 showed up on the local Craigs a couple weeks ago. The seller had acquired it from an Estate sale. It was obviously stained, had a broken treble pot shaft and had been in dusty storage for a while. The seller told me the C20 powers up, the broken pot shaft turns and it makes sounds with a guitar plugged in, although not being a guitarist he couldn't rate the sound quality.

As it took me over 3 years to find my first C20 and the price on this one seemed reasonable to me, I decided to buy it and revive it. It will be a slow process starting out, but may pick up speed. I will post updates and photos as I discover and resolve issues. Here are the baseline photos.

That ought to make for a fun little project :D

It looks like it's in fairly decent shape, just an inch of dust inside
Hopefully that's just grime on the chrome control panel, and it cleans right off with some windex (and the numbers stay).

Yep clean it up and tighten up the electronics and it will roll forever. One of the easiest and simplest amps Peavey ever made and one of the only Cathode biased amps they made.

We will wait and see what is at the end of the rainbow before I score it as a win for me and loss for you.

It could be one of those replace the treble pot, spray all the jacks and put new tubes in. Then again, it could go another direction. Regardless, I am in for the long haul.

As long as both transformers aren't shot it should be worth reviving.

Definitely an even slower start than planned. I have been swamped at the day gig for the past 2 weeks. But I do have some vacation coming up, so check back in a couple weeks.

New tubes from Tube Depot arrived last week. I just got off the phone with Shannon in Parts and the treble pot and knob have been ordered. I am planning to vacuum out the inch of dust, get the new tubes in and clean up the exterior over the weekend ahead. I will give it play test after that and report back.

It cleaned up okay. I did a 90 minute burn in yesterday with the new tubes Now they're burning in again. Definitely looking better :!:

I gave it another 4.5 be hours burn in today, then decided I'd play test it. It sounds good with the knobs dialed up and the boost on. No issues so I'm feeling good about be picking it up. You need one Cincy.

Cleaned up pretty nice. Looks good, plays good, sounds good. Nice save from the grungepile in the first pictures.
