What do the Sheffield's sound like?

Post by VanR » Mon Feb 24, 2014 10:51 pm

I was looking at all the different Sheffield's and wondering what the difference is soundwise. Do they sound like other brands like Celestion etc? You've got Sheffield XXX, JSX, Sheffield 6505, and Penta 12"'s. What is the difference. For example if I like the Celestion Greenback I would like the Sheffield _________?????

In general the Sheffields are a little more raspy than say a Celestion or even a Weber. They can get pretty clean and they handle a good deal of headroom power. When distorted is where they differ from lots of other speakers and aren't quite as clean as others.

I don't see any 1200, 1230 etc. I see Sheffield XXX, Sheffield JSX, Sheffield 6505, etc.

I was hoping someone could say Sheffield XXX sounds like a Vintage 30 or Sheffield JSX sounds like a Greenback etc etc.

Was not asking for which sounds the best opinion. I was asking do the Sheffields sound like a replacement for certain Celestions? For instance an Eminence Governor supposedly sounds like a Celestion Vintage 30. While The Wizard sounds like a G12H-30. So if I want a Sheffield that sounds like a Vintage 30 I would buy the ____________? Have any of you actually ever played these speakers?

Nevermind I just won't buy a Peavey speaker at all.

Did you even read my post ? and yes I have a host of Sheffields,Celestions,Webers ,Eminence and everything else.

The Sheffield doesn't sound close to a Celestion or any other speaker to be quite honest. If you do a comparison test side by side with another cab it won't take you long to notice the difference.

Yes I read your post, but you stated "The Sheffield doesn't sound close to a Celestion or any other speaker to be quite honest. If you do a comparison test side by side with another cab it won't take you long to notice the difference."

Which Sheffield are you referring to? I was asking about 4 different speakers here. As far as I see there is Sheffield XXX, Sheffield JSX, Sheffield 6505, and the Penta speaker which looks like the rest of the Sheffields. So they all sound the same? So if I am confused it's because there are different Sheffields and no one can tell what sounds different about them.

Call Customer Service And Ask To Speak With Roger Crimm

Years Ago.......

Roger posted "Voicing Info" regarding various Peavey Speakers

Peavey never speaks in terms of other makes & models

Peavey Engineers do "Their Own Thing"

Never Came Up To This Degree Before........

Roger = Moderator & Customer Service Rep

Ask Roger if he can answer to level of detail you're requesting.

Peavey Engineers decide......

Power needed, tonal variations they want (Bass/Mids/Highs), breakup, etc

Design and build speaker to suit amp they're working with.

It's not like they say.......

We want "voicing" same as Celestion Model #________

Or, we want voicing of the Eminence Texas Heat

IF they wanted either they'd buy from suppliers.

Peavey builds speakers "In-House" to supply Peavey Amp voicing.

I'll have to say, I like my Classic 412es' 1230s more than I like my Weber A12-150w's in my 5150 combo. Of course, the Webers may not be totally broken in...

Post #2 here: Tech Tips/Tricks/FAQ- READ THIS FIRST! is what Roger referenced before. No offense, if you've already reviewed that.

I know, it does not compare them to Celestions, Webers, Eminence, WGS, etc. I think we have already covered that.

ok~ I have toy'd with this some~
I have a xxx 212, fender DRRI, fender champ, Fender tweed deluxe(5E3), and a fender SS22.
ALL of which I have experimented with the the enclosed combo speaker in the amp also/ XXX 412 cab (xxx sheffields) /also Marshall 1960A 412 cab
Very interesting like most Quests, I had a BLAST doing it.
The 1960A cab sounded more scooped to me, def more trebley and less boxy. The XXX 412 sounded way more mid range BUT in a good way. I tested these combinations with a drummer as well. I stood out more with the sheffields, i guess because of the added mids they seeme to have. When I played any kinda metal, I preferred the 1960A cab tho, more of a 80's sound. However, I don't really play that stuff anymore, and play mostly funk and blues. I know what I play is off subj., but i am just trying to explain what MY interp's are.
The other speakers were a special Eminence ( inside the supersonic 22 )
a Jensen C12Q ( 5E3 )
and a Jensen P12 Q ( DRRI )
The wattage varies on all these - so headroom is diff with them ( not gonna get into that )
just some notes:
The XXX 212 is a monster! & u can score these for 300-500$ used, what a steal!!!
My 5E3 with channels jumped and humbucker guitar = unexplainable europa
My DRRI has the best clean
With any really loud drummer I don't really care which amp I am playing at the end of the day. As long as I we can hear each other~
My 5E3 has to come up off the ground tho and get really close to us or mic'd
