I want to play guitar, not gripe about a failed tube or tube amp

Epic failure NOT
I may be setting myself up for failure, but I have had more issues with solid state amps breaking down on me at shows than tube amps. I actually can't recall a tube amp failure in 30 years of playing. If it does, I always I have my Classic 30 in the trunk ready to step in and take over.

I'd rather have the tone I love than settle for less just because I think it might fail. Let's face it, they ALL are prone to failure. Great thing about a tube amp is if a tube goes out, I grab a spare one in my case and bam, I'm up and running. Can't do that with transistors.

There is alot of fiction in the above.
But, you are entitled to your view i suppose.

Transistor amps don't have the high voltage power supplies
that are needed for the stupid tube in tube amps.
Hence, less heat, less voltage requirements and less
failure.
Can you even imagine NASA using TUBES...
Hahahahah..... hardly.

No fiction, only fact. Unless you think I am lying about my experience. You stick with your SS amps, just leaves more tube amps for me. :D :D :D

Firstly there is no such thing as any clean fish, even salmon.
Secondly I do not dislike a jcm 800, it's just a joke to call it as versatile as say an urea plus or jsx... It's a joke to even call the vtm as versatile.
Third, solid state isn't a failure at all. Especially for certain types of tones or music. You want metallica clean? You want cannibal corpse dirty? You want kings x power? All solid state. Pasty i've seen both types of amps break down on people plenty of times.

Focus, people, focus  :!:

The topic at hand is the versatility of various Peavey amp models. This has nothing to do with your preference for tube vs. SS or vice versa, and certainly nothing to do with dietary preferences or real estate  Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread...

+1 Sagebrother's recommendation of the Heritage. While it won't do "metal" of any stripe all by itself at low volumes it gets dirty and sustainy if the Post volume is up above 3 with the Pre and Sat cranked. Only down side to it is, the Pre and Sat interact in a weird way that boosts the lows and low mids, kinda makes the amp sound "congested" when set that way.

With pedals out front, it's a very versatile amp. It even takes time based effects like chorus and delay well when plugged in out front. 21+ years I've had this amp and I've never needed to use the effects loop.

Since they have essentially the same preamp, you can likely say the same things about the MX combo and the Renown 400. I used to have the MX but had no pedals other than a wah at the time. I currently own a Renown 400 but haven't played it a whole lot lately.

Another amp that gets frequent mention as a survivor and workhorse on this board is the pre-Transtube Bandit 65, aka "teal stripe" Bandit 112. Again, pretty much the same preamp. When I test-flew my Vandy in a pawn shop, I plugged into one of those, set the knobs just like my Heritage and voila :!: sounded like me.

When we were debating over lunch whether that Vandy was the right guitar for me to buy, my wife even said to me, "it sounds like *you*!".
I don't think she realized the Bandit 65 actually figured into the tone more than the guitar
Signature? What signature?

guitaraddict wrote:nice lol. and id have to agree for the ultra series as well, all those amps play everything rather well and from what ive seen they handle pedals nicely too. especially for the price, if only they made a 3120 combo id be set lol. and funny you should mention a jcm because i managed to come across a jcm 900 recently, its the 4102 dual reverb series, switchable between 100 and 50 watts and is a 212 combo. so far its sounds pretty decent on everything ive played for it, though it definately needs a pedal for high gain metal lol. so far the only thing i dont like is the responsivness when i have the gain turned up. it pretty much adds no saturation, just more drive and gain. the guy thats selling it is asking for $530 though and im very tempted to meet him on that offer lol.
The 900 is not as well respected in the Marshall community due to the diode clipping. The VTM series is very close in design to the 800 with the biggest difference being the tube buffered FX loop, dip switches, and power supply. The preamp and tone stack are very similar. Hate to disagree with Lloyd but the VTM is versitile...just not on the fly. Any single channel amp is going to lack options that multiple channel amps have. Just a guess here but most likely why Kim Thayil used 3 back in the day. FWIW listening to his amps...I don't think they were stock either.

As a Peavey and Marshall fan here's what I'll suggest...

Ease and simplicity - VTM for good bluesy break up and medium gain tones.
Ultra Plus, Bravo - cleans, crunch, overdrive
5150/6505 - crunch and more modern overdrive. Some think cleans are lacking, I never minded them though

Marshall - 2205 cleans and medium gain tones
DSL 50 - Cleans, Crunch, modern overdrive tones - takes some planning though to get all three. My personal favorite Marshall BTW.
JVM 205 combo - best all around versitile amp I've found due to Midi switching and quality reverb. The 410 just has a couple of unuable modes....
Peavey Amps: VTM 120, VTM 60 EL34 moddified, BRAVO Peavey Cabs: (2) 5150 Straight

Last I knew NASA wasn't making music. Tommer you can try all day and I will NEVER change my mind about my amps just like you won't change yours, so stop trying so hard to get me to go out and buy a Bandit. Ain't gonna happen. I'm glad you're happy with yours, please allow me to be happy with mine.

PS- Every tube in my amp is new, no antiques.

I wasn't saying the vtm isn't versatile. It's just not as versatile as those other peavey amps I listed. Most of what it does, it does better than those others, but Its still not as versatile...

Why? What's wrong with SS? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. Look at all of the pros who play SS. Stating that something which goes against your preferences is an epic fail is an epic fail unto itself...
