some of the most versitile peavey amps around.

Post by guitaraddict » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:56 am

so im bored at the moment and thought id strike up a conversation, the topic being: what do you consider to be some of the most versitile peavey amps ever made? im talking amps that can melt faces with great distortion and overdrive, with or without the pedal, but at the same time can clean up decently. im still kind of new to the world of amplifiers so i was curious on some of the opinions of the other players in this forum. :)

Most versatile amp a jcm800? I've got a toy factory up atthe nrth pole that I'd liketo sell you some stock in...

Apparenty the penta is very versatile in a classic rock sort of way. The ultra series(triumph, rockmaster preamp, ultra, ultra plus, xxx, jsx, 3120, xxx II) is very versatile. The supreme 160 could cover ALOT of ground. Considering the effects it had on board and all three channels, the revolution head was very versatile too.

xxl head
vtm 60

past -
bastardized 410 cab
rock master preamp
supreme 160
valveking royal 8
revolution head

I'm gonna throw the Triumph series amps in.

Granted I don't play metal but it will do it. I do play everything from Country to Rock and Blues and it does it all and does it well. With 3 channels you can really set it up for 3 very different styles of music if you want.

nice lol. and id have to agree for the ultra series as well, all those amps play everything rather well and from what ive seen they handle pedals nicely too. especially for the price, if only they made a 3120 combo id be set lol. and funny you should mention a jcm because i managed to come across a jcm 900 recently, its the 4102 dual reverb series, switchable between 100 and 50 watts and is a 212 combo. so far its sounds pretty decent on everything ive played for it, though it definately needs a pedal for high gain metal lol. so far the only thing i dont like is the responsivness when i have the gain turned up. it pretty much adds no saturation, just more drive and gain. the guy thats selling it is asking for $530 though and im very tempted to meet him on that offer lol.

also for cost effectiveness as far as versatility is concerned, ive found the valvekings to be quite nice too. ive played through several and ive heard that have some tube swaps and even some different speakers they become very nice amps lol.

how does the transtube series stack up against a tube amp? ive yet to ever play one but i hear some people giving this amp absolute praise, my only thing is that they dont seem to make a 212 combo lol. how does it compare in volume and sound quality to an all tube amp?

Jack on the back... plug in extra speakers... 80Watts total.

I don't like tubed amp "maintenance" and other tube amp breakdowns that
you hear so much about.

Read manual for Bandit (attached..see below)

Then a Peavey VTM 60 or 120 would be right up your ally, it was made to compete and top the JCM800, not sure how true this info is but heard HP sent 6 Marshall amps out to the best mod docs around and had them mod them up with the best mods they could. Then he recreated those mods in the VTM amp, with the dip switches you get all the mods at your finger tips. Thats what I had heard for years about the reasoning behind the design.

Besides the Peavey Bandit being the #1 seller for very many years, The Classic series, especially the Classic 50 is now 20 years old and still selling. I use it for every still of music I play. I have several different Peavey guitars to choose from should I require a different tone.

lol - usually the folks who dont like the JCM have never owned it or played it

and if its true that HP modeled the VTM's after the 800's then he knew they were on to something - if you dont believe they can be clean with lots of headroom listen to some 80's Jeff Beck

i've never played a VTM - i would sure like to try one though...i've heard that the 5150 was modeled after the VTM but dont know if thats true...
