Overall "best" solid state Peavey guitar amp?

Post by Mojo » Sat Jan 23, 2010 9:42 am

What gets your vote for the overall top solid state amp? Take into account versatility, tone, build quality, available power, portability, price, availability,... EVERYTHING.
I realize that different people have different needs, so the best will not be the same for everyone. This thread is asking for YOUR vote.
Please also post your reasons for your choice - I think it might make for an interesting discussion.

I forgot to add - this is of all time, so vintage and discontinued amps are in the running.

I would vote a Transtube Peavey Bandit. I owned both the first and second generation kind and they were the definition of reliability and good, usable tone. I got a little bored with them after awhile and went back to tube amps, but I never had a single problem with them.

I don't think you can beat the Special 130... 130 watts.. single scorpion 12... awesome workhorse.. I had one for 15 years and never had a thing go wrong with it.

I have to agree, the Special 130 is a great sounding reliable amp.

But my vote in terms of versatility and tone would have to be the Stereo Chorus 400. I owned one in the past and you would be hard pressed to find a cleaner toned amp with tons of power and solid bottom. I would put it up against a Roland JC any day.

I have to agree. I have the Bandit Red Stripe 2001 USA model and an extension cab and I love it. BANDIT BABY!

I've gotta go with the Bandit Solo Series.

XXL by a long shot for me. I have had 2 different bandits and 2 studio pros, a backstage and a heritage. None has the versatility, power, or tone of the XXL. The XXL can duplicate any of them quite well and go place none of them can reach.

I'm surprised no one mentioned a Vypyer yet. Too unreliable?

Anyway, with all due respect to the XXL, I'm going with the red stripe Revolution 112. So, in effect I'm agreeing with all the red stripe Bandit votes here, I'm just adding a third channel for extra versatility!

I'm voting for my Special 212 II. Tons of tonal variations, great reverb, 130 watts, two Sheffield 1230s, designed, and manufactured in the CSA! :)

Except for when you have to carry it, that is an awesome amp! It's just like the Revolution, but with an extra speaker and a couple more watts.
