Christians and Tattoos?

Post by Stormleader » Thu Aug 18, 2011 9:32 pm

I know several months ago we had a "Christians and Rock" thread that was very civil and had some great insights in it, let's see if we can do it again please, because I have a question.

So, I saw this link of Facebook and was intrigued with some of the comments: http://journeyintotheword.com/2011/08/w ... t-tattoos/
So, I guess what I am asking is, what is your view on Christian's getting tattoos?

Now, my personal view on tattoos is that it is OK for Christians to have them, just like I think it's OK for Christians to eat pork, etc... I think that not only was it to set the Jews apart from the people around them, but it was also for sanitary reasons I would bet... All that being said, I have no tattoos, nor do I really plan on ever having any, can't really say it is something that I would personally be comfortable doing, knowing that I would have them for the rest of my life.

What do y'all think? Once again, please keep it civil guys, I know you guys are a cool bunch and I doubt it will be a problem, just a reminder. :)

I have tattoos, so I may not be the best person to ask. That being said, I think it is between the individual and God. I am not qualified to judge anyone's faith. I would have to get the log out of my eye prior to digging around in someone else's.

My dad is Christian and has tattoos. I know a lot of Christians with tattoos. So, I really don't see a problem. I guess it depends on how conservative they are.

Definitely a delicate subject and I cast no stones as I live in a glass house. I was always taught at Church that our bodies are temples, a place where God and the Spirit can connect with us, and that we are to respect and treat our bodies well. With that said I have done my fair share of defiling my body :o

I remember first showing up at my parents house with earrings, as if the long hair wasn't already and issue with them  Just like anything else they soon overlooked the fact and things went on. I briefly once thought of a tattoo but the thought of permanence put me off.

One thing I did notice is that people make instant judments by appearance and truthfully a lot of them can be spot on. I was trying to look exactly how I was feeling and how I wanted to be portrayed. I feel tattoos wear your emotions and attitude sometimes literally on your sleeve and may not always reflect your true self and can even bring on unfair judgment and treatment.

I believe having a clean slate is the best choice as it always gives you opportunities to shape yourself and lifestyle to where you are at in life.

Respectfully, my two cents :)

rekigion is rarely a good topic in a forum like this. many people are shocked to learn or even consider that truth and morality are always relative. But anyway...

Christians and tattoos? They are not related. You can be a "good Christian" and have them or not have them. You can rationalize having them or not having them in some sort of religious terms, but you will find most people will not rationalize the whole issue the same way. You can have tattoos and be a Christian or be something else.

Tattoos are a current fad, and it will go away, just like shag hairdos, mullets, sagging your pants, or wearing your collar sticking up in the air. wearing hats backwards to look cool seems to defy logic though. It has stuck around WAAAAAY longer than things usually do.

And tattoos have social implications that change all the time. I am in my mid 60s, and when I was young, only punks and military got tattoos. It was a way of telling the world you didn;t care about social standards. (Punks - they were also known as toughs, hard-guys, JDs for juvenile delinquents, greasers, and other things.) But now tattoos are mainstream. Every kid on the block has started coloring in his skin. Or hers. One major difference: A couple generations ago, someone got a tattoo for some purpose. To demonstrate allegiance to some group - Army, Navy, Gang, whatever - or to distance themselves from some group or thing. I am going to go get a tattoo of an eagle to represent the Army. Now just getting a tattoo itself is the purpopse. I have heard groups of young people actually say, "Hey, why don't we go to a movie, then go get a tattoo?"

But lots of things change. When I was a kid, leather jackets meant a rough guy. Think Rebel without a cause. You saw a few kids wearing them hanging out on the street, you worried they were going to pull a knife and rob you. But America went through a "punk" phase a few years back. Well maybe 20 years back, I forget. Hey, I'm old. The streets were full of kids - high school and college age - with leather jackets and the whole greased hair look. They had the same appearance as the JDs of my era. I was in town one day walking along near a group of them hanging on a corner. One kid separated himself gfrom the group and started towards me. I thought, "Oh crap, whay is this guy going to do?" He got to me and said, "Excuse me sir, do you know what time it is? I am supposed to meet my mother at the library at 3 o'clock." Point being that social behaviors change their meanings over time.

Your body is a temple? Sure, though mine is more of a rotunda. Body/temple is not a CHristian thing. The laws of the Torah are about taking care of your body - don't eat the unclean things or it will suffer. But Other religions feel the same way. Even eastern "godless" ones. And totally non-religious people fel that way.

I see tattoos on women more and more. I don't find it attractive, but it isn't up to me. I see women with some sort of round shape on their calf, a flower or some design I suppose. However they start, tattoos always seem to turn out the same blue-green sort of color. The first time or two I saw one of these, I thought the poor woman had a large bruise. Now there is an attractive thought.

But i wonder always. ANd specifically women in this example. Most women will not wear the same clothes every day, and even if they wear something like skirt and blouse, they won;t wear the same colors day to day. They buy differnt shoes to fit different outfits. They accessorize with differnt jewelry and accessories. They change their hairstyle and makeup. Etc etc. SO why would they permanently disfigure their skin with a decoration that never changes? The tattoo of a bracelet around the ankle for example.

SO Christian? Not a part of the tattoo decision.

Try living in the deep south bible belt where Christians here seem to contradict themselves so much its like watching a 3 ring church circus. Many Christians around here are very judgemental of others to the point they might have a tatt of a cross or "Jesus" but then be critical of someone with a skull tatt declaring them a devil worshiper.

There is still the mindset in the deep bible belt the whole problem with the world is when women went to work and started wearing pants. Im sure those types see tatts as evil.

I dont have any tatts and really never considered getting any. I dont see tatts as a bad thing.

I see nothing wrong with it,as long as the content is ok. Pot leafs and naked ladies obvioiusly is not cool, but like anything else there is good and bad. I have none myself,I know a lot of chrisitan people who do. My bass player has several, and is 100% on fire for God. It's between you and God.
I have enough trouble keeping the guy between my elbows in line.lol

I have seen some cool tats though. Scripture, musical notes, honestly I like the whole arm glove tats. I think they're cool. Prolly will never do it, but it's cool.

A tattoo is a mark on the body made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis through puncturing or incision. While tattoos have come to experience mainstream popularity in recent decades, people have been getting tattoos for thousands of years for a variety of reasons. Some were tattooed for beautification, others for military identification, some for religious significance, and in many cultures social status was identified via tattoos. There has never been just one reason people get "inked."
