Re: Is there a difference between KB/A30 and KB/A50?

Ok, what I've seen now is that the KB/A30 appears to be "made in U.S.A." and the KB/A50 appears to be "made in China". That would explain cosmetic differences like different pot knobs since it makes sense to source generic parts locally. I haven't looked at more than a few samples so it might also d...

Re: SS Rage 158 Volume Pot

Stupid question: what's your soldering setup? One can burn pot tracks. Essentially you want a temperature-controlled soldering iron with sufficient wattage in order to make for quick non-lethal soldering.

Re: SS Rage 158 Volume Pot

I see essentially three failure modes: wiper and upper tap of the pot are shorted (via a broken C13 or a solder bridge), the lower tap is not properly grounded (cold solder joint?) or the track of the pot is broken. The first and third problem should have the volume drop out when the pot is set as f...

Re: Having to buy all my amp models again!?

Honi soit qui mal y pense... That this is an entirely accidental oversight that has managed to escape attention for decades is somewhat hard to believe.

Re: SS Rage 158 Volume Pot

Sorry for being unclear. The question was whether the post lead pot affects the clean channel.

Re: SS Rage 158 Volume Pot

Does the post lead pot have any effect on the volume? If it is not properly separated via the lead/clean switch, the ability of the 1M pot to do anything would be quite compromised.

Re: Peavey Solo Series Bandit (early 80's)

Something else you can do in the mean time is pull the magnet off of the Scorpion and clean the voice coil groove. There are some videos on you tube. I've had 2 over the years that sounded bad when I got them but was surprised how much better they sounded after cleaning them. Semi-relatedly I clean...

Re: Peavey Solo Series Bandit (early 80's)

Well, at lower wattage the speaker has a different excursion layout. The Bandit is supposed to emulate a tube amp but at significantly higher power than common tube amps. So a fitting speaker will have a larger linear excursion range than a greenback, meaning that you get an equivalently compact sou...

12V phantom power mod for KB/A 50

I am not a fan of batteries, so I prefer powering my electret microphones via phantom power (by now, converters from XLR phantom power to mini-XLR 3-pin are ubiquitous). 12V is enough for the typical adapters available here and is what all the opamps in the KB/A 50 work with, so it's readily availab...

Re: Peavey Solo Series Bandit (early 80's)

Well, of course the standard question to be asked here is what kind of sound you are aiming for with your speaker replacement.

Re: Customer service question

So this was the state from 2 weeks ago. Is there an expected age of requests where one has to assume that they have just dropped through the floor and one should retry?

Re: SS Rage 158 Volume Pot

Ok, so clearly from the photographs it would be the schematics you posted that are relevant, so that would make it a 1M log pot. Sorry for the confusion. If C13 is shorted (part defect or solder bridge), that would explain your problem. You could try just removing it for a test: I may be mistaken bu...

Re: Studio Pro 50 Board/Component Layout Diagram?

Given good photographs of front and back of the PCB (by PM I guess), I can try to concoct something like the following: kba50layout.jpg Of course, without labelling, the utility is moderate at best, but at least it makes tracking things somewhat easier. In my case, I am still waiting for the schemat...

Re: Pacer 100 hum

Signal breakup at very low volume could be the biasing diode for the main output transistors. Transistors don't "turn on" until the input voltage is about 0.7v, and if you have a transistor (or bank of transistors) on the + side and another set on the - side, when the input voltage goes from + to -...

Re: SS Rage 158 Volume Pot

Well, this is a different amp altogether. In your schematic, I read clean gain as 1.5M log, distortion pre-gain as 1.5M log and distortion post-gain as 10K linear. Lots of transistors, making it a transtube. My guess is that it isn't the same as an SS Rage 158. A photograph of the controls might giv...
