With the current world econnemy I wouldn't hold my breath. But it would be great.
I tend to keep my expectations low. It makes it a lot easier to be pleasantly surprised. But I figured someone had to put the idea out there.

Hey, Peavey! Build a class D Transtube pedal amp!

It’s all pretty much in the title. Small pedalboard fly rigs are the big thing right now, so why not wrap the Transtube tech around a class D power section and put it in a stompbox? I would buy one.

Peavey silver stripe Bandit vs. 1972 Marshall 50 watter

Last night I A/B’d my Bandit and my Marshall JMP 50. The Bandit really stood up to the Marshall! What an impressive little amp, and the Sheffield 1230 speaker sounds great! I played the Marshall attenuated by a Tone King Ironman II through a 2x12 fitted with Celestion Heritage 55Hz G12H-30 speakers....

Re: Modded my Bandit…

I finally got a chance to turn up the Bandit to high volume. Wow! It really does compress and thicken nicely! I was playing on the clean channel, and got a gorgeous edge of breakup tone. I’m super impressed. Buying this Peavey was definitely the right choice. I also have an old SS Marshall 5215, and...

Re: Modded my Bandit…

Ah, yeah the electrolytics. There are a lot in there, mostly 22uF and the big filter caps. I know they’ll need replacing soon, but I’m trying not to worry about it right now.

Re: Modded my Bandit…

Those small .022 caps are quite often the 1st ones to get leaky or just plain fail. Any more when I get an amp I replace them even if the amp appears to be okay. I had never heard that before about .022uF caps. Are you talking about that value among all types of capacitors? Or just for the little y...

Re: Modded my Bandit…

Addendum: I removed the clipping diode network from the emitter of Q21, and instead replaced diode CR9 (which is next to R40) with a germanium diode. This does the same thing but with fewer components. I also added an anti-parallel 1N4148 in the same position, which helps smooth the distortion a tad...

Re: Peavey Envoy 110 1997

This is tough, because the Transtube amps were designed to give a sound that was contemporary, ie they sounded like the music the kids were into at the time. It’s a fairly “modern” sounding amp. You have crystal clear clean, and modern gain tones. I’m not saying it’s impossible to mod it to sound mo...

Re: Modded my Bandit…

Yeah, I have the Sheffield 1230 in it, and it’s a great sounding speaker! I have no impulse to replace it. Is it really rated high enough to handle the 80 watts the Bandit puts out?

Re: Modded my Bandit…

That’s a fair criticism. If not for the JFETs, I’d say the mods to the normal lead mode were relatively simple. I had more trouble getting the high gain mode to behave as I prefer, though. I don’t think of it as a rebuild because didn’t have much to do as far as rewiring the amp. The signal flow is ...

Re: Bandit Silver Stripe clean channel question

Of course. I use PAF style humbuckers, and I think the Bandit clean is plenty clear. Maybe not spanky Fender bright, but it’s a really nice clean.

Modded my Bandit…

And I’m thrilled with the sound and feel of this amp. Don’t get me wrong, the stock Bandit is nice. Also, I didn’t really change the character of the amp. I just rounded off the last little bit of transistor fuzziness, beefed up the normal lead mode, tightened up the high gain mode, and added more c...

Re: Bandit Silver Stripe clean channel question

One thing I learned about the Bandit is that some treble gets rolled off on the clean channel if your lead channel pre gain is maxed. There’s a 470p coupling cap to the lead circuit, and the wiper of the pre gain pot is switched to ground when you’re on the clean channel, so you get a 470p cap to gr...

Re: Bandit appreciation from a newish member

I thought about buying an Envoy instead, mainly because I don’t have any amps with a 10” speaker. But I liked that the Bandit has the dynamics and presence controls, and they’re easier to find. The presence control is important to me, because I tend to crank it on all of my tube amps (though I never...

Re: Bandit appreciation from a newish member

A question while I’m here: Is the reverb tank in a silver stripe Bandit normally loose in the bottom of the cabinet? Every other amp I’ve ever had with reverb had the reverb tank screwed down, but this one isn’t. I didn’t see any holes for screws in the vinyl bag or in the bottom of the cabinet, but...
