Problem recording Vypyr 75

So I bought a Vypyr 75 the other day, and just tried recording with the USB connection to my computer. The sound I get when I record is absolutely terrible...it full of static and clipping. I tried recording with Vista's Sound Recorder, Transcribe!, and Audacity, all of which give me the same results. I've tried all the different settings on the amp to no avail. Tried different usb ports on my computer which did nothing too. I don't know what to do...can anyone help?

Quite possibly it could be how the level controls on your computer are set up. Try messing with the input slider on your computer. If it's set too hot it will indeed distort and fizzle just like any other recording console

Hmm yeah I just tried messing with the the input levels and stuff but it's still doing the same thing, just a lot quieter or louder lol. I think I've narrowed it down to either the actual USB output on the amp and my usb cable. It's the only two things I can see causing the problem. But I'm pretty sure having a bad USB cable is highly unlikely, I got it from my printer since its the same usb plug. I don't think that should be a problem would it? My best guess is I have a faulty USB output on the amp.

My guess is you've found out what many of us have: USB record out either sucks or isn't even recognized by a computer. Search through the threads and you'll see a few discussions. What ticks me off is that Peavey's moderator doesn't seem to notice what we're talking about. If there's someone out there using USB successfully please step up to the microphone...

I only hope one day they develop something useful with the USB port - I'd happily trade its intended use in for a PC connection and some patch making software.

Well that's just ridiculous then...what's the point of having this "studio quality" USB output when its complete crap?? Huuuge disappointment Peavey...so now I have to use the headphone/record out line instead to record, which means I won't be able to hear what I'm playing in real time since there's delay from the computer and I can't plug in headphones and the line out at the same time. That's just awesome. I might as well get a mic setup instead. I was really excited to use the USB for recording too, thinking it'd be much better than the headphone out while allowing me to save my money by not having to buy a mic setup. Guess not...anyone else have some insight on this? Is it maybe just a really large batch of Vypyrs with bad USB outputs?

That's exactly what it means. I had 4 different Vypyr 75's with a variety of problems and ended up returning all of them. The USB output on everyone of them was just as you described. The crackling, static, low-fi type sound. It's far from "studio quality", in fact it just plain sucks. I have a fairly modern computer (3.16GHz Core2, 4GB RAM, 7200RPM Seagate HD) and the latency was horrific. The headphone out is much better, but very thin sounding to my ears. It's not your cable so save yourself some money because I've been down that route. I have a Boss GT10 and a POD X3 Live and the USB recording outs on both work flawlessly on my computer. That's how I know it's not the cable or my computer, it's the Vypyr. This is one of the reasons that I'd opt for the Vypyr 30 if I ever decided to try one again. The USB is useless and there are no future plans that I'm aware of to make better use of it. The powersponge is also pretty useless. I have one of the new Vox VT50 and the power level feature on that works perfectly to play at lower volumes and allow for a less sensitive volume control. So for me the extra wattage isn't worth the $100 difference between the 30 and the 75, escpecially without an external speaker jack.

Just to put it out there, i have had the static, unwanted noise. But as soon as I changed my USB cable it went away. It works fine for me.

Yeah I've got a very similar computer setup to yours (E8400@3.5GHz, 4Gb PC2-6400 RAM, WD Caviar Black HD) so I knew from the start it wasn't the comp, or even the software like Audacity. I was wanting the 60 watt tube Vypyr from the get go, anyone know if by some miraculous chance the USB output is better on the tube Vypyrs? Oh and I've tried the headphone out jack and it is definitely better, but still not what I was expecting. Playing SRV's Little Wing cover still sounds like balls, it has a bit of an overdriven sound to it even though when I play it straight from the amp it sounds perfectly clean. And I agree the power sponge is useless, for pretty much any tone I've tried it's just better at 100%. I'm so friggen dissapointed...why would Peavey bother with the USB if they knew it was that bad. Just a gimmick? FFS that pisses me off. Please tell me there's someone out there with a good USB output on their Vypyr! ...give me some hope haha...

EDIT: JKR12 really seriously lol? What exact cable did you have and then switch to? I might want to try doing the same.

Yeah, my recordings sound good through the USB. Right now I use a Geek Squad 6 footer. Good Luck

Yeah, the USB output on my Vypyr 75 has that same clipping, popping sound when I tried to use it also. I called Peavey tech support and they told me to bring it to an authorized repair shop (30 miles from my house) and they will swap out the USB board for free. At least they are standing behind their amp.

It bummed me out though because I've never done any recording before and I was excited when I bought this amp thinking that I will finally be able to record myself and track parts easily. GUESS NOT HUH PEAVEY!!!!

It's been a month since I noticed the problem and I haven't brought it in for repair yet. I think I've just given up on that USB output.

JKR12: What software and sound card are you using as well? I can't even get the crappy crackling crap. I'm using Sound Forge and it doesn't recognize the Vypyr as an audio device though it's just fab with my POD XTL. Are you listening Peavey?.......

Twangler: It doesn't matter what sound card you use, the Vypyr just shows up as separate sound card, and since its straight through USB it has no interaction with the sound card on your computer. Also, I don't think the recording program will make a difference. Try Audacity if you want to try a free recording program, its really straight forward. But yeah when you hook up your Vypyr to the computer it should recognize it right away (of course only if its turned on).

JKR12, do you happen to have any samples so we can here the quality of recording that your getting? That's odd that all it took was a Geek Squad cable. I doubt that there's anything special about that particular cable, there must be something else. If it were my cable, I don't know why the sound is clear through the USB on my Pod X3 and Boss GT10 with the same cable. There's too many people with the same exact problem to be just the cable. There was another thread where someone posted a sample, but the sample had the same popping and clipping that most of us have heard. I haven't heard even a decent recording through the USB yet. I'd be interested to hear what you've come up with because most haven't been had the same success.

Strange, since the USB output is a digital universal serial bus and not an analog audio device. It should be sending digital data down the bus and any pops and crackles would be generated at the source, in this case, the amp's "sound card" emualation.

I think this is a case of insufficient user manual tutorials instead of hardware. Some are getting good recordings and some are getting noise and clipping. There has to be a reason for this and a fix.

This may be related to the ASIO driver, and the core audio engine that you have selected with your audio programs. Try looking under the hood of those settings. Make sure that your audio program even supports ASIO drivers, which I believe that the Vypyr is recognized as. I could be wrong. But it wouldn't seem to make sense that the jack itself would vary amp to amp.
