I recently bought a Peavey HP Special Flat Top that is practically brand new. When I received it, I was excited to see what a beautiful guitar it is. But when I started to play it, I was startled to find that every single fret end on either side of the neck protruded just enough to make things uncomfortable.

Is this how frets are cut on this guitar? I had two Wolfgangs in the past and neither felt like this. Should this guitar feel very close if not identical to those? Like I said, I love this guitar, but I don't think I can get past this. Has Peavey had other customers complain about this? I suppose I could have the ends filed, but I really don't think I should have to do that to what is a nearly new instrument.

The man I bought it from has agreed to take it back, and I will probably take him up on it. But it has left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth regarding Peavey guitars.

What country was yours made in? Never seen that problem on the USA or Korean models...

My USA Wolfgang has the same problem. My guess is that the neck was not completely dry before the installation of the frets. From there, the neck probably shrunk just enough for the frets to stick out. Mine is an unfinished neck, so during the dry winter months, it will shrink a little more if I don't keep it oiled.

I have heard of others with the same condition. Mine is still playable (to me), so I'm not in that much of a hurry to get them filed. I figure I can wait until I need fret work, or new frets altogether.

I guess I've been lucky with unfinished necks in the past. By the way, this is a USA-made instrument. For the price these things list for, you'd hope they wouldn't rush the production (not letting the necks dry adequately).

Does anyone from Peavey customer service have a response to this problem? Doesn't sound like I'm the only one who's encountered it.

I'm glad this topic came up. I have an HP Special CT USA model with the same problem. Schildster, what kind of oil do you use on your wolfgang neck?

i have 2 custom shop hp cts. both came like that right from PV. A good dealer should do a quick file job as part of initial set up for free. saved me the 20 bucks, especially since the guitars cost me over 2 grand each.

I use Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the neck, then a lemon oil without wax to oil it. I try to let the oil soak for about 30 minutes, then I rub it in and remove any excess. Some people warn not to leave too much oil on for too long of a period, for fear of the neck getting soft. That could cause loose frets. I have not had that problem yet.

Like I said ealier, oiling does not cure this problem, it just makes my guitar more playable to me.
