Stained finish repairable?
Stained finish repairable?
I have just acquired (through no fault of my own, it followed me home I swear) a 1989 Patriot which quite possible was used as a weapon at some point in the past. Lots of deep gouges and buckle rash on the back. The color seems to be a stain with a satin poly top coat. I can just barely see the grain through the red but where the top coat has been breached it is a much lighter pink color (see photos). Any thoughts on if it is even possible to fix this amount/type of damage?
Any help appreciated.

Looks like it will require Full Body sand & re-do.

That is a do over for sure. Sand it down and finish it the color you want.

A start over project for sure, now you get to decide to restore it to original color or a chance to get creative.

Re: Stained finish repairable?
You shouldnt of sanded it to wood unless you plan on doing a transparent finish or for some reason the base had an adhesion issue. I see all too often internet warriors telling people to sand the finish off to re-finish a guitar. Because a very hard self catalyzing sealer base was shot in the factory you now need replace that base.
The wood was likely ash or poplar.
Fill the dings with bondo. Because its sanded to wood you need to use a high build polyester filler primer. After the filler is shot and cured you will need to sand that to paint spec before shooting the color/clear.
Oh....and 'rattle can' is not an acceptable medium for painting guitars.
-And....because your already this deep you might want to think about routing a second pu. This is purely an optional thing....
Good luck.

Re: Stained finish repairable?
On second look that does not appear to be a factory finish.....it looks like someone that thought they knew what they were doing sanded it to wood and tried to refinish it.
If this is the case, sanding to wood would be necessary to remove the horse poo on the guitar.

Re: Stained finish repairable?
That wood is poplar.
If you're painting yourself, or need advice, feel free to send me a message here, I've done quite a few refinishes.
Luckily, poplar finishes well, and takes stain easy, but this one will have sanding sealer. If you want a translucent, "stained" appearing finish, it would be best/easiest to simply apply a translucent candy coat of the color of your choosing. IF the dings are just where the wood is pressed in you can steam them out, or sand them down. If its chunks missing, then yeah, go with wood filler, and then a good etching primer to get you started.

Cover the guitar in carbon fiber (*not the vinyl), it will impress the ladies....and looks awesome. Then you dont need to worry about dings showing.

Doing a REAL carbon fiber top is really really really difficult to do accurately!!! I Tried this one like 3 or 4 times before giving up
Dont worry, she turned out ok

WOW! Thats amazing!
That said, thats not a DIY job, thats definitely vacuum bagging, pro mold having material.... The difference between that and a DIY job is astronomical and you know it.
